Dead lawn. Best way forward?

I’m new to gardening and looking for advice please. My garden was very overgrown and I’ve managed to clear most of that away. The lawn has been mostly overtaken by weeds and I wonder what is the best way forward. Should I kill it all off over the winter and reseed in spring?

New gardens are always exciting. How long have you had your new garden? Can you post some pictures. If it’s an overgrown garden that was once cultivated there could be some treasures lurking around unnoticed so far. For this reason I would not “kill it all off”. You could be inadvertently killing off good stuff like bulbs and wildflowers. Also what do you mean by weeds? One persons weed can be someone else’s best plant.

If it were my garden (and it’s not) I would probably mow it, keeping it on the long side for at least a year to see what’s there. Spraying it off would be an absolutely last resort.
