Well, at least you know, now, Jenny, how to calculate, the difference in measurements of measurements of air pressure like bars, inches of mercury., psi, hpa, etc, to read your French Barometer, don't you???:dunno::whistle::heehee::loll::lunapic 130165696578242 5::cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

            Hi,

I'm with you Upsy; I was taught the real way too and even now when I'm metal turning on the lathe if I'm turning a shaft to suit a metric sized bearing I convert the metric diameter to inches (thous) I can go down to 0.0001" on my Imperial micrometer and although I have brand new metric micrometers I never use them because I can't seem to get to grips with them. OK I'm a dinosaur but I remember when we could buy sweets for a farthing and a Mars Bar appeared twice the size it now is? :awesome:

What sweets could you buy for a penny?

            Kind regards, Colin.

They probably were because like everything else they reduce the size but the same price, so they can say that they've kept the price the same.

Good evening all, been a sunny afternoon with light breeze.
Make the most of it, after the weekend it's light rain every day.

My Mum worked are Trebor Sharps, we used to get free reject sweets.
Once had a load of black jacks that had missed out on part of the process, they were white:biggrin:, but tasted exactly the same.

Just another sunny day, but cool.

It was supposed to be dry and sunny today, but grey clouds and later showers of rain saw and end to that. 17C/63F

Don't forget that -40C = -40F :lunapic 130165696578242 5:, but an easy comparison in the hot weather is 28C = 82F. The reason Fahrenheit seems more accurate and descriptive than Centigrade is that there are approx. 2 degrees of F to 1 degree of C. So we rarely needed to use decimal points.

Sweets for a penny:- our local sweet shop used to make their own sweets and their cutting machine was a delight for us kids. They were enterprising enough to have a 'production line' in the shop. The sweets were extruded in the back room but the cutting machine was just in a hatchway behind the counter. The hot sweets came in long, continuous strips and passed under the cutter and then out on a small conveyor belt across the back wall of the shop. The cutter compressed the end of the strip as it cut and that's why they all used to have the flattened end.

Bits used to break off and fall through the holes in the bottom of the belt. After a few runs of different sweets the bits were all collected in a big box and a scoop of bits was 1d. There was always a tray of bits on the counter as well and you were allowed to have one freebie bit whilst deciding what you wanted to buy.

The jars of sweets were the big glass ones with screw tops and not the posh Kilner jars as in the picture in the other post. :heehee:

My grandmother used to make cherry brandy in those jars and, 50 years ago, I used to pickle cucumbers in them and sell them.

Back to the weather:- :love30: Still drought here and the sprinkler has been going all day yesterday and is on again today. Sunny, cold and dry at the moment. I don't water the grass so had to soak the area around the bonfire the other day to stop it getting out of hand. Some of the grass still got burnt!
