Neither are Thaler or denarii. My solution was to melt them down and sell the precious metals.

The fritillaria Raddeana looks beautyful Armandii :blue thumb: how much did they cost ? arm or a leg or both :hate-shocked: . I've had hit and miss crown imperial fritillaria drainage being the main problem but not wanting to flower planted deep or at the shallow edge ( 6inch ish )

My bulbs turned up yesterday 100 tulips including some species ones for the garden Peppermint stick - 50 daffodils some to replenish stock of tahiti / sir W churchhill / recurvus and a new one blushing lady. Some crocus and Iris reticulata - 25 double snowdrops - scillia peruviana - Allium caerulem which have been unreliable but trying again / stipitatum curious to see if the picture matches the plant ( I doubt it probably photo shopped ) and 6 Allium Ambassador. I have some other bulbs bought from the garden centre as well ;)

Hi Perki, well, they're not that cheap, but I've bought them from Farmer Gracy because their bulbs are top quality. I have bought from others, like Parkers, and been let down on quality and also being sent the wrong bulbs although labelled correctly.

So one F.Raddeana is £7.70 but I bought a package of 5 which has cost £31.28.

I'm obviously on a Fritillaria and Allium splurge as I want to make a feature of them in the garden as I've just bought..........

                  Fritillaria "Rubra"

I've already got 6 F.Rubra, Lutea, and around 20 Allium Nectaroscordum, but they're always a good addition.

That is a problem, Perki, because as you know, Fritillaria like to be planted fairly deep.
I'm lucky to have sandy soil that is black because of the manure and compost added over the years.

Well, gardening is always a bit of a gamble when planting bulbs or plant. I would be lying if I said I've had 100% success because that would definitely untrue. My gardening history is littered with plants and bulbs that failed for some reason.
I've just bought 50 bulbs of Allium Nectaroscordum which has always been a challenge to grow and so I treat them differently by planting them 4 inches deep in pots placed in the Green House. For good drainage I use a mixture of compost, sand and grit which Nectaroscordum seems to like, but even so the success rate is always variable.

@ARMANDII I am always on a allium spurge mostly because I am good at chopping them up with the spade . I've got some nectaroscordum but prefer the more traditional ball shaped alliums , not grown forelock. I have Summer drummer its been fantastic, grows more like a leek and comes up early send long stems up 6ft+ hanging there waiting to flower for months , started to flower late July and they are still there now not flowering but structurally. Now the bad news  mine didn't flower till the second year I suspect, I planted 7 small bulbs originally ( 2017 )and none flowered, so bought 10 good size bulbs last year and I have 3 flowers this year  from what I remember near all popped up in spring, I probably chopped some of the old summer drummer when replanting hence why 3 flowers. I know if I am right next year .

I would highly recommended Allium Purple rain if you can still add some more bulbs to your order . Better than purple sensation same colour but bigger more open head but flower a good 2-3 weeks long if not more.

The Bees love them, Perki, and they have that spear shaped sheath just before they burst into flower which sets them apart.

I never use a spade when digging up plants or bulbs:nonofinger:, I always use a Fork as it does less damage.

I think you're right, Perki, small bulbs of large Alliums usually don't do well in the first year.

                        DD

Done!!:heehee: I've just ordered 10 bulbs and surprisingly they are the cheapest against the rest of what I have ordered.

We have, literally, hundreds of them and they spread like mad! I suppose it depends on soil type. We sell over 100 each open day and I just dig them up (using a fork :heehee:) as required.

The areas where they do best are the ones where we don't add any compost. don't know whether it's a coincidence or not. :noidea:

We have them in different shades of pink. The one you showed was a lighter pink but the darker ones are also quite striking
                          P1280307.JPG

The bees go mad over them and we have estimated that we had over two hundred bees on one patch of about 50 plants this year.

You're right, Shiney. The ones I have in the borders don't like rich soil be prefer "poor"
soil, so I tend to add sand and grit to where I plant them.

                                Clematis 'Betty Corning
from an advent clematis grower in Ohio. She mailed it to me on Tuesday and got it last night. Wonderful root bulk, planted it right away near my climbing rose on the side of my deck. What a treasure. Been wanting one for years.

This fall is the first fall I have not ordered a thousand of some type of bulb. Giving myself a break, think the 200 thousand right now can stand alone. Still lots of thinning to be done yet again next spring, and moving about.
