I’ve seen a lot of reports on the poor paint on Tesla’s but I do think old Elon has successfully pushed electric cars to the point where the other manufacturers who thought it would fall down Have had to rethink the situation. Unfortunately for Elon the other manufacturers will simply out produce him and probably have better quality cars straight off the bat just like the jag Merc and Audi.
That Porsche is a chunk but it’s near 90k for a top iPace with the nice options. I’ll have to up my lawn cuts to get one
The good news is I get to drive whatever she goes for.
Personally I really like the Honda E, it’s a great little car but for the battery but it just reminds me of my old mini which was great fun.

Puts my old XJ into perspective...... I love the comments 'oooh, you must be loaded having a Jag....' The fact that it costs a third of the value of their three year old Focus escapes them.

Honda are not the company they were, so be a bit wary there - they suffered badly in the big financial crash a decade or so ago, and they haven't really recovered; personally, I think they lost a few of their best engineers.

Porsche, well they are a whole different bag - if you can afford it, then fair play to you; life is too short, and there are no pockets in a shroud.

You mentioning a mini, I do have a hankering for an old motor at some point - maybe not a mini though (lost too much skin on my knuckles as well as eyebrows and hair working on them when I was younger) - the worrying thing is that I would probably bring home something sad like an old Citroen XM (can't afford a DS!)

the local Honda garage in Beaconsfield has just closed so it’s funny you mentioned that but her old CRV has been a very reliable car but it’s performance is sluggish and the auto box is very slow to react.
there’s no way I could afford these cars, my VW Caddy is 11 years old now, stinks of fuel and David Attenborough would be proud to see the life that’s taken up residence. it’s done 43000 miles only though and has been a good van in general. She’s been in it several times and is not impressed lol.

That is likely to be a variation of the CAGA engine in your Caddy - - well known for injector seals failing, as well as tandem pumps going awry, and there is also something to do with the EGR valve that goes wrong (can't remember off the top of my head what it is though), all of which can lead to the raw fuel smell. You need to be careful with that, besides anything else, it is not good for your lungs.

Cheers, the fuel smell is from all my petrol gear and fuel canisters. I’m use to it now but she hates it. VW also service it once a year and a free heath check in between, some work on the drive shaft is needed but not too bad. I seem to have a collection of wasps in there at the moment. 3 days on the trot and just got home and a wasp was on the steering wheel. Hate them!

she’s off tomorrow to look at a Porsche, not the electric Taycan but she likes their small Macan S. the Taycan is quite long and low but I did say she could still look and decide.
SUV is what she likes and I said just try one. I think she’s in for a shock when she drives it compared to her old CRV.

The Macan is out, she’s had a look and it was all too much for her with all the settings and techno stuff. I did warn her it’s a beast!
I’ve now suggested a John Cooper works Mini in the countryman style as it’s a higher version of the Mini. Plenty fun to drive and simple operation.
The other day I saw a model 3 parked outside mine and I went and had a look. Oh my I see what they mean about panels not matching, straight of the bat the chrome rear door was well out of alignment when the door was closed.
We have kind of moved away from electric as it’s still to early and some of the times charging some of the cars are way to long and say in Cornwall there’s not as many about as round here so petrol just stops the anxiety issues.

Well a bit of an update. I arranged a drive in a Mini Countryman Cooper s for her and all went well but it’s too small:dunno: I thought it’s was large for a mini, loads of room.
She now wants to go back to the Macan we looked at which was new with 500 miles but it’s sold so she either has to spec one from new and take the depreciation hit but I’ve found one at a Porsche dealer with a turbo version with performance pack and it’s a almost fully kitted to what she needs and more. 2017 model with a 3.6ltr.
she would spec the standard 2.0ltr version from new and that’s just not got the backbone to lug a heavy car about.

3.6 Turbo, that will go like the proverbial manure off of a shovel!

I think it’s the last engine Porsche built before they went with Audi in the Mecans.
To be honest I think she needs a smaller runabout car, easy to drive and park but she likes SUVs.
Trouble with Porsche is that everything is extra, every little bit so to find a 2 year old model with the spec you would want is near on impossible where as it’s so much easier in say the mini to have park assist, cruise control, city braking, rear view camera and so on.
I did show her the i3 from BMW and we went to have a look at them but she was not keen.

after some thought I told her a Porsche really is not what she wants so I persuaded her to try out a Lexus NX and she’s just been for a test run and so far she likes it.
She’s a slow driver so I thought it was worth a go as they are comfortable but not known to be quick cars. 48k new and they have offered a 3k discount so 45k for the top model with extras.

You won't get much more reliable than a Lexus for sure, and their dealers are usually top notch as well. They won't set your pulse racing, but then they won't put your blood pressure up with niggly faults either. Could be a very good choice.

She’s gone for it, we were exchanging messages and she’s really happy with the car. It suits her as she’s a slow driver which is why I thought might be a good choice rather than some speedy sports car type SUV.
The dealership apparently were very friendly and unlike the mini place they are doing all the work regarding getting her private plates removed and fitted. They had a March car there with the spec I wanted for her which was the Takumi and its 7k less than a new one.
I can now relax, I’ve never looked at so many cars before.
Even though she drove over they offered to drive to her for test drive, day, evening and weekends. Got to say they do seem on the ball with customers.

                          Happy days :)

I must admit my brief experiences with them has been positive - I collected a car from one many years ago for a director of our company, and given that the car was only in for a basic service, the service was impeccable. I was treated to a nice quiet waiting area, with proper freshly brewed coffee and a nice selection of biscuits, I could see the workshop area through a window and you could have eaten your dinner off the floor, the car was driven out to an undercover area (it was chucking rain), clearly fully valeted and then recognising that it was not my car and I was collecting it for someone else, they had someone show me round the car (essentially where things were and how they worked) and even offered to take me on a test drive to make sure I was happy that I knew the controls. That, is service.

My only other experience was sourcing and collecting a part for a friends car (IS I think) which was a section of wiring loom - they took the time to go and get their electrician out of the workshop (without asking) to come and tell me the easiest way to fit it as it could be a tad difficult to do (I knew this as I already had the old one off the car!), and sure enough the way he told me to do it took a third of the time putting it back on than it had taking it off. Better still, I didn't even ask for this, they just saw what the part was and grabbed the electrician.

Around the same time, I collected a Volvo for another director, and the service was almost the complete opposite. The car wasn't ready at the specified time, I had to sit on a plastic chair in the corner of the showroom, freezing cold, no coffee and quite a curt attitude from the staff. When I did get the car, it was absolutely filthy still and I was so mortified that I took it to the hand car wash guys at the big Tesco before taking it back - - no way was I handing a car over to a director in that state. That Volvo dealer disappeared not all that long after that, and is now a block of flats.

Well, I wish you both many happy years in the new car when it arrives.

Not that it will help at this point but I had a land rover evoque for a day recently and it was really nice to drive and use!
