September 15, 1979, I have watched that date since then. the weather is always the same. Perfect blue skies, puffy white clouds, never rains. Rains on the 14th sometime, and yes on the 13th. But never on the 15th. And the temp a lovely 72 degrees always. So my little study says, I see no change.

Sorry for the much delayed response. A case was bought before the courts. AKA Charlie Brown was employed by the local council, as a refuse collector. Dustman. binman etc. An item that had been put out by a householder and was now being loaded onto the dust cart, caught his eye. So he picked it out and at the end of his working day, took it home. The council who he worked for took him to court, for theft. Court ruling was. Charlie was found guilty of theft, stealing from his employer. Once the item had been collected and deposited on the dustcart. It became the property of the council. So PETTY I agree. That's how the law works.

Members here being gardeners and all that, is it not the case that plants take in carbon dioxide and put out oxygen? It has (apparently) been verified that there is more `greenery` today due to the slight rise in carbon dioxide than there was say a decade ago, but much less than way way back.
So one argument is that the rise in carbon dioxide is actually better for the planet.
One element on all this climate change debate than seems to be omitted is the effect the sun has on climate warming which in my mind would be the biggest contributing factor.

Wowee, I managed to start a good debate. At this juncture may I honestly and respectfully thank all members for their contributions. My Hon. friend Shiney as always contributed so interlectually, and, where is he. Ah! there he is. Our cuddly Jag owner. (wink)
Many fine and honest comments and appraisals have been given.
May please ask. Your thoughts, feeling, ideas regarding the Mayor of London.. Perhaps this may appear at this point in time as being only applicable to to the populas of London, but it is spreading.
Compulsory scrapping of cars over a certain age. So might this become a new thing. Yet another hit the motorist. Now a vehicle age three years has to have an MOT. Here emissions are recorded. Isn't this enough. So backyard mechanic gets a later engine from the breakers yard, stuffs it into his 04 reg car. This is where the Mayor's plans go tits up. Now on the MOT test bed. The car is legal. Check the Index plate. 04. NO GO.

The latest. The Mayor is going to give owners of older vehicles 2 grand to get them crushed. My car has only clocked up 35000mls. I have no intentions of driving into London especiall the A4. Even in the 60's this was a smog area.
I do so apologise for ending so abruptly but I go into hospital in the morning and must alas get to bed. Night night. Hopefully, back soon. Mike.

My dear friend. What you say may have some substinence however may I respectfully ask you. Are you able to quote some published documentary evidence.

Your quotation is basic physics, botany and biology. I confess. I am no historian. However prior to this country's industrial revolution etc, would youy not agree, this island was much greener and probably much healthier for it's time? Just a thought.

This is a difficult question. What does 'much healthier' mean. There's no doubt that the population are much healthier than in previous centuries but the health of this island may, or may not be. There is a lot more conservation of land, landscape and environment than there was in my parents' day. How far do you go back? :noidea:

I think I'd question the "much healthier " scenario re the UK population. Apart from the well advertised obesity/diabetes problem, TB is making a comeback as well as those problems associated with people refusing vaccinations for their children. The ageing population also creates more health issues - years ago, we would have all popped off well before we were either suffering from or being diagnosed with even the more common ailments.
There may well be more "conscious" conservation efforts these days - it is not only seen as being the thing to do but more and more necessary as we gradually become more urbanised and distant from nature,
Global warming was always a bit of a misnomer - climate change expresses the situation more aptly and seems to cover the changes over the last hundred or so years. Obviously our planet has gone through many changes before that time but if we can accept that we all have some responsibility for our current problems, either by our lifestyles or our actions, must be a good thing surely ?

I agree that it should be called climate change and not global warming and I think most governments and organisations term it as such.

Of course the ageing population creates more health problems but that's not necessarily a sign of worse health problems but of improved health allowing people to live longer. Having said that, I have serious reservations about whether the next generation will live quite as long because of the worsening attitude towards good food and exercise.

We need to, somehow, control consumption of deleterious foods and poor health choices. Do I have any idea how? Nope!

I try to go someway towards it on a personal level but am not prepared to go all the way. Selfishness and laziness are my constant companions.

My personal thoughts are, if climate change does exist, and is caused by humans, then a shorter life expectancy can only be a good thing.

Lets face it, on a personal level we would perhaps like to live longer, but only if the quality of life is there, living as a cabbage and unable to die is just ridiculous.

And as I say, if WE are actually causing the so called climate change, the fewer people the better for the planet and especially wildlife habitats.

It has been pointed out that less acreage of frozen land is great for producing more crops and consequently oxygen.

Population control in undeveloped countries is, in my opinion, much controlled by mother nature whether we believe it or not.

And then there are the Gretas and other rich people using 60 foot yachts that left a giant carbon footprint in their manufacture, who lecture us. We'll see how she gets home.

In the meantime, I'll keep growing my little green friends and inhaling their offerings, both life giving and gratuitous scents. Giant ROI.

And I'll be as kind to our orb as possible. :)

My Dear Friend. Yes I agree with your comment. Please may I elaborate. Fair do's. Much depends upon our starting point, but for the time being I will perhaps confine myself to say the past two hundred years. History books reveal to us what life and living conditions were. Life in general is recorded to be very much perhaps lower than animal life. Perthaps in what we now accept as general terms. To folks of those days. Education was basically unheard of. Self hygene....what's that? To take a bath. This, if it ever took place, consisted of remaining partially dressed. Medically due to thge lack of personal washing etc, no end of body affections existed. The lack of morality, VD and STD's were rampant, it was no shame to have syphlis etc. The world was plagued with generally whatever was a death bearing threat to human life. Times change and medical science enters the stage. Especially in the field of medicine. So many advancements. So even today. Some side step jabs for this and that. That remains their choice. So us oldies are peraps being used as guinee pigs. I'm an oldie. I am at this very moment recovering form a cancer operation, so at times, I may pray. Please God, let me die. Yet along comes help and comfort.

I've probably posted some of this on here before but, here it is again.

Theres no doubt that the climate is changing. Thats part of a natural cycle in the life of the planet. If we look back roughly 1000 years back in time, archaeological evidence exists that shows grain crops were grown on Greenland. Enough to support a population of over 200 000 people. By around 1400, the climate was so cold this was not possible any more. The climate got colder until around the beginning of the 1800's. Then, it started to get warm again, as it is still doing today. Of course, it could be said that time was the period of the Industrial Revolution, and the cause was pollution caused by that event. As far as I am aware, no indisputable evidence to prove either case has been shown.

On to Greta. Lets see. Her monthly income exceeds the annual income of probably all members of this forum. Added to that, her campaign is being carefully controlled by a PR Company (common knowledge here) and by her own admittance her speeches are written by adults. The words are not hers. Its been brought into question as to whether or not her "how dare you" speech in front of the UN was not just an act. One of her parents is an actor, so its very possible she was schooled in this. Whichever way things go, she never offers any solutions to the problem, be they sensible or stupid. In my opinion, there is only one place a 16 year old should be. Its not on the worlds stage, but in the classroom getting an education.

One of the current "buzz words" is carbon dioxide emissions. FACT: The CO" emissions of virtually any car made over the last 30-odd years can be drastically reduced. It would take about 30 minutes to do so! One problem though...its illegal! I wonder why? Could it be taxes?

As to whether or not cars are the biggest producer of pollution brings to light an interesting fact. Venice is one of the most polluted cities in Italy. Why do I mention that? Easy. Anyone that has ever been there knows that cars are banned from the city! Food for thought?
