As part of the new build we'll need new kitchen and bathrooms - as I haven't done this in forever has anyone good or bad reviews for kitchen and bathroom suppliers? Not bespoke, more like Wickes, Magnet, Wren etc

We completed a new kitchen and bathrooms 3 years ago. A quote and plan from Wickes was very good, lovely product range. In the end we went with a small supplier and fitting company who used JJO kitchens. The prices are similar to Wickes but cabinets are supplied assembled, saving lots of time. They must have a supplier in the Surrey area.
Be wary of "Prestige" and "Bespoke" suppliers, who will supply the same kitchens with a £4000 surcharge.
Be prepared to live out of a microwave and take away meals for two weeks +

We had our last place gutted room by room over five years while we were living there and my kitchen was out of action for six weeks Harry. It's not easy living with just a microwave when the family has five members. Washing up was done in the bath. I think Andy mentioned they wouldn't be moving in straight away.

Don't forget the before and after pics Andy.

I don't, but bear with me until tomorrow and I will ask my neighbour - he is in the trade, and delivers kitchens for a living, so will know exactly who is good or bad.

We used the bath for washing up as well! Make sure you account for all Brillo pads before having a bath yourself

I think Wren was on watchdog????, but not sure, think it was something to do with using outside companys to do the fitting of kichens, again not sure

Be a long time coming, the room isn't built yet! There's another thread I'm trying to keep updated on the house and garden adventure...

That would be awesome, thanks FC!

Ah. Will have to look that up!

We used a small local company to fit our kitchen 20 years ago. They used pre-built cabinets made of 18mm chipboard which were much more solid than the flat packed cabinets. The kitchen still looks great today. We did replace the work surfaces for corian about 5 years ago but that was because we wanted to update the look of the kitchen.
The cost wasn't that much more than the likes of Wickes.

Oh I'm good at spending peoples money !

You could have a shower cubicle made of corian as well. We priced it up and it was way over the top. We went with aquaboard in the end

Ha! Get in line - everyone is spending my cash at the moment! Bloody estate agent was croaking about putting in swimming pools and the such until I pointed out quite bluntly it was a dumb idea and to stop spending a clients money that will be paying his fee... (wasn't having a top day but hardly feel badly about that lol)

I have at least heard of aquaboard which is something but that corian stuff looks very smart. I do like a good thermoforming material...

I've fitted 2 kitchens, both from Magnet.

First one was for my parents who won ? thousand pounds to spend on a Magnet kitchen, so lucky me got to fit it for them (for free).

Second one was for our current house and bought about 27 years ago in one of their 'sales', but still seemed expensive, but the units carcass didn't sit on the floor like cheapo (incl Wickes) ones.

The veneered wood finish still looks fine, just the knobs and drawer D handles are looking a little tarnished, but do Magnet still make them to same standard 27 years later?

Doing everything yourself saves a fortune (units, worktops, plumbing, tiling, flooring, etc.), unfortunately householders can't do their own kitchen electrics, probably even including under wallcupboard lighting.

So, so sorry Andy - I got caught up with work and haven't had a chance to speak to my neighbour; as he is up at the crack of sparrows in the morning, it is a bit late to disturb him now - I will knock on tomorrow, I promise.

I'd love to see the plans. Having renovated my own kitchen some 25 years ago, I never get tired of seeing other people's dream kitchen plans :)
