Strongly suspect all is accurate but decontextualised, of course. But look at this...

        https://d25d2506sfb94s.cloudfront.n...agtju43jkj/MainstreamUK_190920_LabMembers.pdf

Far too many of them sound like unpatriotic, authoritarian Far-Leftists, and this is coming from someone who has voted Labour for most of my life! I was hoping it was a case of unrepresentative, extremist leadership, but nearly 1200 members seems like a substantial sample.

That survey has clearly been taken by people who have no idea at all how the world works. 70% of them would get rid of our nuclear deterrent.

That response alone says it all.

Putting on my analytical, statistical hat I can only comment that the survey is a totally nul one as they only asked Labour Party members those questions.

Apart from the obvious bias in the questions they should have asked at least two other groups to answer the questions. One should have been Conservative Party members and the other should have been Don't Know Which Political Party I support group.

That would remove a part of the bias of the questions and of the target group.

Presumably this poll was commissioned by the Labour Party. :dunno:

What do you mean "putting on"? Let me guess "you can prove anything with statistics" (blah blah blah) Please suggest an alternative for establishing what party members think. What "obvious bias"? You just flippantly make hypercritical statements with zero substantiation, mate.

Top right hand corner, YouGov. An organisation with a moderate conservative bias, probably.

My goodness, @Nikolaos, you obviously don't know @shiney very well but you can't be expected to be familiar with his gentlemanly manners of trying to fence sit whenever possible in an effort not to offend, because you are fairly new here. I trust his assessment, plus that of several other longtime members here and have been impressed by their tolerance of buffalo butt droppings. Some of mine can be numbered there too.

I have been reading this thread for quite some time and have noticed that the majority of those who do not have their main residence in Britain, or who seem to have only semi-settled there and want to keep "their options open", want the union to survive.

A sad development. The slippery slope that started with dual citizenship. No loyalties, just opportunism.

Just my opinion. I don't live in your beautiful country but if I did, I would be fierce in supporting sovereignty.

I get the feeling some are talking from cross purposes here, the survey appears to be of labour members, which is what, i think it is supposed to be.
Cant see how a conservative bias comes into it?:smile:

@CanadianLori I simply want him to elaborate on his "obvious bias" statement, that's what grown-ups exchanging cogent arguments tend to do, I'm afraid.

                        Will Shiney concede the following:

                        1) There are differing degrees of bias from any source.
                        2) No source is truly impartial.

If he doesn't, then any further conversation with him is utterly futile. I don't give a flying toss about his "gentlemanliness", that's glaringly obvious. So is the fact that he's extremely bright. My response to those I don't value is one of utter indifference, so that should tell you something.

Hope I'm not out of line here, but I'm just wondering if shiney kind of missed the point, @Nikolaos , about it actually being a survey of labour members?

Out of respect to GC I shall answer this part but usually do not reply to members that are disrespectful of other members.

Your two statements are quite correct and self-evident. :blue thumb:

Hi @pete no, you are always polite, if a tad straight forward  :heehee:, but I did see that it was a survey of Labour members (as it stated) - but showing that type of survey negates virtually any general value to the conclusions that can be drawn from it. How statistical doing a survey of 1100 people out of a membership of over half a million is a matter for conjecture but as they have to renew their membership each year I would presume that most of them are interested members.

The YouGov part of the name is, in my opinion, a very clever name as it implies that it is part of the government and therefore impartial. They are a straight forward global commercial polling company quoted on the Stock Market.

They do surveys for money (good for them) but a survey of a single like minded organisation, whichever it may be, tends not to be relevant to anyone apart from that organisation. It allows the organisers to examine and develop their strategy but does little else for others.

For a poll to be relevant to most people it needs to be held over a mix of people otherwise it is simply of relevance to a closed group. As our mini polls on GC are only likely to be of relevance to us gardeners. Publishing that poll is, in my opinion, just a good publicity gimmick.

Hi, Nick. I think you'll find, should you ever have the pleasure of meeting Shiney personally, you wll change your mind regarding his approach to commenting on subjects. Both he and I try to inject a "flippant" and humourous approach to this thread in an attempt to keep things cool. He know's quite well that

                                upload_2019-11-10_22-29-6.jpeg
and it wouldn't surprise me if he hadn't originated the saying:dunno::heehee: His experience in Business and various organisations is vast, and he is still involved heavily in Charities although it is not a thing he boasts of. So if he was what you regarded as flippantg and insubstantial then it was for a purpose.
From my point of view and work for the Legal System I have to say I take any statistics, (except scientific), from any political or "neutral" organisation with more than a pinch of salt. Media, of any sort, is now competely untrustworthy and even the TV sources including, unfortunately, the BBC, seem increasingly biased in this more than 3 year Brexit period. I'm a "got to see, touch, smell, taste, feel" cynical person which is/was essential for my once full time and now part time work for the Courts, so I never, ever put any weight behind any polls. statistics presented to me from any source until I can verify it beyond doubt.
Knowing you, as I think I do, Nick, I think if you ever meet Shiney you will come to recognise his statistical, business, and approach to both that has earned the respect, including mine, of others who have met or dealt with him in Life. Also his natural generousity has helped many people who needed it and he gave that help without even being asked for it. He's going to hate me for saying the above but it has to be said.
But my original point was, and is, that if Shiney posts something, in any thread, it's with purpose and usuallly a slant of humour.
