The British Isles is the name of the group of islands we live on. The country is the United Kingdom. There are over 4,000 islands in the British Islrs of which about 200 are inhabited.

My mother was a war bride. My father, who flew Lancasters during the second world war, met her in Darlington, married and when the war ended, he took her home to Canada. I do realize that for some, the change of country is unavoidable.

And retiring to a nicer climate is a great reason for a move particularly for a gardener like yourself.:dbgrtmb:

I was just noting that AntiBrexiters seemed to be represented by non residents. And you've added yourself.

              Only an observation.

Oh, and my mother wasn't allowed to retain her British citizenship when she became a Canuck but it never took the best of Britain out of her. What a unique childhood I had :)

Our country isn't the United Kingdom KFF it's Great Britain. The United Kingdom is a title given to each separate part of Great Britain brought under one 'banner'. As it happens I never refer to the country I live in as the UK, I always call it Britain or Great Britain. The same applies to the United States of America.

I’m afraid this thread has been toxic, for a long, LONG time. I could expand, but I’ll just say this. Nearly half of the population thought leaving is/was a bad idea. To dismiss them as a bunch of ‘moaners’? Not helpful. I have to say that I’m surprised that such a mean-spirited thread has been allowed to run so long.

Nooooooo! Don't stop the thread please.

You know how the media don't give all the facts or opinions of both sides. Here, I get to read honest opinions from gentle, intelligent folk. Both for and against.

I like reading these posts because I learn something each day and what reporting we get over here is watered down or out of the mouth of that poser, Lord Conrad Black. Another embarassment on our side of the pond

Freddie so nice and comforting to hear from you. Where have you been. We have all missed you so much.
So my Hon. Friend. Not being numbered among the political supporters. Once upon a time. Back in a period of unrest, some three and a half years ago. Something or someone sparked of the idea of Britain, the UK or whatever title may be applied.
It came about that the peasants now known in this 21st century had voiced their distrust etc in this co-union known ast the EU. The peasants had had enough of being under the thumb of a contintal formed authority. Who knows. Perhaps the echoes of two world wars may have had some influence. Oh! and then that great old song. Rule Britania.......England never never will be slaves.

Yes, perhaps all those years past, joining a pact with, at the start, France and Germany seemed a good idea. Since then the EU band has increased. The UK appear to be. Sad to say, the losers. It comes about that many member countries are poorer than us. So we bulk up the shortfall. Then looking back. The UK. Great Britain was.....Yes was...past tense GREAT. Now in our present state. We have been unfrocked of our long standing justice system, We no longer decide how to grow crops, farm etc. Sadly England is no longer GREAT.

Perhaps we are experiencing a second peasants revolt. The general public (the employer) were granted to have their say. They voted. They voted leave. Since then, some 3.5 yrs on there has been this controvercy between the public (the salary payers) and the government the employed spungers. Now is the time. Remain or Get out.

No, I chose my words carefully. The United Kingdom ceased to exist in all but name some time ago. And what the other three countries started, Brexit would finish off. As for Great Britain......

I've noticed that English people no longer have the right to describe themselves as such, whilst Scots, Welsh and Irish proudly declaim their nationalities in all and every circumstance. Just striking a blow for independance :yay::biggrin:

Now that's a sentiment I do admire! One thing we can all agree on is that the Press and media in any country is bought and paid for by one faction or another. And, if we're honest, all we can do is base our opinions on what we're fed, trying to sift out the genuine facts along the way.
Lori, there are few Brits living in Europe who would be unaffected by Brexit, and not for the better. The lucky ones are the younger, working ones in secure jobs, but for hundreds of thousands of retired folk on modest incomes, it has meant/would mean being forced to return to Britain, if only to ensure continued health care. Perhaps that could be perceived as selfishness, but I suppose when your health/life is at stake, you do what you must.
Unfortunately, also, there are just as many nationalistic, uneducated folk in the various European countries who are ready to tar all Brits with the same anti-EU brush, not realising or caring that only 52% of the population that voted in the referendum wanted to leave. That can make for a very unpleasant atmosphere and, taken to extremes, witchhunts and pogroms.

"There has been much anger from Hindu communities over Labour passing a motion criticising India's actions in Kashmir at its annual conference."

Looks like Jezza has now alienated the Hindu community - who have publicly stated that those who have previously voted Labour will now vote Conservative.

Jezza must not get into power.

No please don’t stop this thread.
This is my first port of call each day ,quite an education for us mere mortals(not being a political dinosaur).
                                Controversial, self opinionated ,funny..........and Pete.
It seems that most on here who have spoken seem to be leavers ,although we are a completely divided nation and will continue to be so .
If we do manage to “Get it done” remainers will not lie down ,I suppose that is the nature of our new democracy.
Despite being divided and the present chaos ,I look around the world and I don’t see many better places to live.

                                So think on.
