Good afternoon @CanadianLori many breeders pair up birds in November in order to have new birds ringed (i.e. a ring put on their legs) in the new year. This annual ringing is synchronised for January 1st in the UK, and it means there are new, young birds ready for spring shows.but I shall wait until about march/May next year so that my birds are at least a year old,has they can have 3/4 clutches a year but I only allow them to have one clutch a year

Budgies are physically able to breed after six months, but should not be allowed to do so until they are at least 10 months old. A younger bird will often fail to be a good parent females will be able to breed for four years, and males for six.

                  Hi Woo,

Well the terms "Spangles and tufted" are new ones one me, though it is a very long time since my Dad bred them and must confess never really thought about keeping them since.

However, now we have the time you have stirred our interest, and sure we can find lots of info on the web, but could you give a yea or neah to just one simple question please.

In our garage we have to totally separate enclosed area for storage and could house a small flight cage of 7ft long, 4ft high and about 18" wide or alternatively one about 5ft wide, 4ft high and up to 3ft wide.
Would that be enough for them to fly reasonably well and if so how many could be housed.
We could easily add an outside fight to it later.

                  Thanks

Good afternoon @ricky101 I'm trying to visualize your measurements ,the 7 ft long and 4 ft in high seem fine, its the 18 inches wide which concerns me a little,as you know I am no expert now if it were Roses:heehee: I would imagine at least 6/8 Birds,I have automatic lighting/heating in mine at the moment which come on at set times ie lighting at 4/7pm and 4/7.30am and when the temperature drops below 55 fahrenheit but go for it ,its a lovely hobby with its own rewards:smile:

                      Hi Woo,

That 7ft long is if we had it length wise giving the narrow 18" depth, but we could have it width wise as 5ft long, 4ft high and up to 3ft deep which should give them more room to open their wings ?
( mentioned in the above post, but as an edit, so you might not have noticed it)

Think 10 birds would be more than enough and as its already a well insulated space, no real worries about heating / lighting etc.

many years ago I used to have 3 aviaries and 2 pigeon lofts, I loved all my birds but especially the softbill's, Pekin Robins in particular

My pigeons were on a completely different level, not birds...... family to me!

Yes, I was "SAD" in those days!
