    “Sandy soil?” They said.
“You should grow carrots” they said.
“They love sandy soil” they said.
“They’ll do well for you” they said.

    They said..... 002EF4D9-AC83-4DA7-A040-75F9673F91EC.jpeg

For those of you not familiar with the standard Ikea kitchen scissors scale, it measures 9cm, or 3.5 inches....

It's a very nice carrot, though, and the flavour will be out of this world

We are roasting a rib of beef to accompany it tomorrow, and will be carved with due pomp and ceremony.

This is the biggest we had from our washing up bowl carrot allotment this year:

Then again, the full harvest looked brilliant displayed in a posh wine goblet, much better than a vaseful of flowers. And they tasted lovely :)

Shall we have inverse carrot harvest competition next summer? Who grows the smallest, or least roots per sqm... or most effort for smallest gain... or best harvest feast with least substance.. :heehee:

Is there a prize for negative carrotiness? Didn't get one single carrot last year. I'm sure I sowed seed

You may care to try this? I've just had a bumper crop that we're still digging and nowhere near finished yet.

Start collecting 5 litre clear plastic water bottles, the squarish ones. When available, try Nantoise and Rote Riesen varieties of seed. Draw out a drill, quite deeply, and scatter a liberal quantity of chicken manure pellets along it. Refill the soil to about half an inch deep. Scatter the seed and cover.

Place your water bottles side by side along the row, holding each in place with a stick or stiff wire pushed in from the top (neck) end and into the soil. I waited until the bottles were crammed full of foliage before taking them off. The greenery flopped all over the place without support but, apart from a bit of slug damage, no sign of carrot fly and lotsa carrots.

                Bon chance!

Our carrot crop was nearly as good - and we don't grow any! :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

                Hope it tastes good. :)

@noisette47 , sounds like your carrots were even more absent than mine :dunno:.

Is this the right time to mention the butternut squash plant that we grew up a framework, à la Monty, to a height of over 6 foot, watering it with our precious reserves for water through the heatwave, to have no/zilch/nil/nada squash....:heehee:

Sian, you may want to double check that you are following the advise of the correct Monty.

On that note, I invented boiled mini cucumbers last spring. Who could have known that May sunshine can heat up a blowaway greenhouse so very efficiently? :noidea:
