    Good evening all.

First time poster so apologies for the newbie questions that I’m sure will follow.

I bought a new house in the summer with a nice looking garden.

Of course, with a million and one things to get done, a lot of gardening tasks were low down the priority list.

I have noticed that one of the plants in the borders has completely died off and left a brown leafy mess in the border.

My question - what was this plant? This will allow me to do some research.

should I dig out the dead stuff?

Will it grow back next year?

    thank you for your time.

    Looks like crocosmia.
You can cut off all the dead foliage, it will come back with new next year.

      Thanks for the speedy reply.

Is it just a case of cutting it right back to the soil? And it will shoot new growth next year?

Yes, just cut back, it grows from corms, small bulbs, so will regenerate next year.

Fantastic, really appreciate your help Pete.

Will put together a wee garden file so I don’t end up asking the same questions every year!!

The corms (look like bulbs) will multiply quite easily on their own and there's no need to do anything to help it. If the plant spreads too much, over the years, you just dig up some of the corms. It's tough as old boots and is happy looking after itself. :blue thumb:

Sounds like my kind of plant! Easy maintenance and looked nice when bloomed.

May get some more for next year!

I don't know where you live but if you're able to come to our charity open day next year you can have some free. I gave away a few hundred corms this year and shall probably dig up a load more this coming year. :blue thumb:
