“Yep, experts, I do have time for experts, but as far as I'm, concerned they are a bit late coming up with all this, bearing in mind we dont have much time left, and who are they?” Not that late really, it’s been a ‘thing’ for quite a while Climate Change First Became News 30 Years Ago. Why Haven’t We Fixed It? The problem is that it takes absolute proof before most will accept it. There are still some that won’t accept it. “No, we get Greta fronting it, in a very aggressive way, blaming all of us that have been around for a few years.” I imagine she’s as frustrated as many others. I honestly don’t think being nice is going to cut it anymore. Anyway, it’s the message that’s important. If we keep pointing fingers at others, nothing will get done. I think it will be a case of the band playing on.
“but there are also a large number of experts/scientists that disagree with that entirely“ Can you point at an accredited body?
No more or less accredited than other sources such as Wikipedia quoted earlier, but here is just one - "The List" - Scientists who Publicly Disagree with the Current Consensus on Climate Change - Electroverse
WiKi is one of many sources, easy enough to find lots of others. As for your list, it’s just that, not an accredited body. I have to admit that I’d already looked up to see what bodies were involved in this, in general terms, and stumbled on the fact that all accredited bodies were in agreement. Anyway, I’m off, it’s obvious that the musicians of the band (that played on) will carry on playing.
I really don't think the band wants to play on though @Freddy - personally, I am very sceptical about a lot of what is being said currently as all I am seeing is excuses for taxation with no real suggestions as to what actually do to make things better. Worse still, I am seeing things that could and should have been sorted many years ago that still aren't.
Lets all fly out to one of them Climate Conferences with the world leaders to discuss it and have a good time skiing at everyone's exspense and sort nowt out We must stop using plastic, so now i'm having stuff in paper bags, so more trees will be cut down because of the change, any way I had some bird food in paper bags (25kg) so I thought i'd put the empty bag into compost bin, well the paper bag had a plastic sheet between the two paper layers so I had to take the layers apart to remove the plastic which I now have recycled
Greta is another Rosa Parks who refused a mundane expected thinking and importantly, started a conversation. The facts have always been there, but they remain within the learnt world of academic publishings until someone drags then into mainstream world of social media.
Climate change is real but just how much of it is 'man-made ' is hard to quantify. That however is no reason for us to ignore it and hope that it will go away. But Greta Thunberg comes from a family that has never had to choose between heat or rent. They have never had to visit a food bank. So for some precious little twit to tell us about how great she is because Thunberg Inc has the money and time to use a ship instead of flying, that people should pay more for energy, that the poor are irresponsible for not buying organic food and so on rubs me up the wrong way and switches me and many like me off. If she had some real life experience she might be more effective. As it is it just comes across (to me at least) as a self serving vanity project. Sorry. 100% spot on I'm afraid. Reduce the population of the developed world and that will make a bigger difference than all the other token gestures that are put forward.
Great post @pete I do have a lot of time for Greta, she is a symbol for the new generation that will hopefully wake them up and realise they need to do something. I say 'they' because I agree with pete on how us baby boomer generation have taken much more care. I despair at how the Milleniums and 30 somethings act, there are plenty at my work place and they haven't a clue on what needs to be recycled, most companies these days provide bins for different things but the younger staff can't tell the difference between an aluminium can and a teabag. Switching lights off when a room is empty doesn't enter their heads whilst they turn up thermostat to sauna levels. Air-conditioned offices are unnecessary, what's wrong with building offices with proper windows that open. We have become too soft. The proliferation of fast food delivery services is another bugbear, we have a generation that never cooks or visits a shop - relying on Amazon Prime and Deliverroo to exist. It's unhealthy and wasteful. I hesitate to think how my parents generation would react, gone are the days of boiling a kettle once in the morning and using a thermos to make hot drinks the rest of the day. I know that's too extreme for me but a return to a less selfish life style is needed. All little things make a tiny difference but if everyone changed then there is hope, so Greta may just inspire the next generation to stop behaving badly. Hopefully the subject will make it on to the school curriculum. Kids won't listen to us old wrinklies nor respected experts like David Attenborough - someone their own age might just be the answer.
Just to reinforce my point about the 30 something generation being out of touch: Greta Thunberg changes Twitter name to 'Sharon' On Celebrity Mastermind asked by host John Humphrys: "The 2019 book entitled No-one is Too Small to Make a Difference is a collection of speeches made by a Swedish climate change activist. What's her name?", Henderson guessed "Sharon." And Greta has a sense of humour too: "Greta Thunberg has changed her Twitter handle to "Sharon" in a humorous response to a video clip of a TV quiz show blunder."
Sadly, things like this only adds weight to the thought that it is more about money than anything - Tony Blair to earn millions as climate change adviser
Very funny video from BBC Scotland - sorry, I can't link directly to the video, so it is via a Twitter link: BBC Scotland on Twitter
