    Better welding skills than me!
    We're formally withdrawn from EU but until we negotiate the next bit, a trade deal, or the deadline of 31 DEC passes then not a lot has changed for most of us. Plenty of parody to come yet from the negotiation table...

    I'm a supporter of HS2; I think it is beyond time that the northern regions had faster access to the capital and beyond. I have found, as with all government projects (every last damned one I might add!), that their approach and competency is severely lacking but whatever the cost I believe it needs to be implemented. Just wish they'd employ some better project assurance people and be up front about the errors being faced.

      I agree @Loofah , HS2 is needed. I live not far from Birmingham [ around 20 miles away ] and it would be lovely to use a high speed train service to visit places further away

      Can I also say that I am fed up with people complaining about train fares. Long distance fares are incredibly cheap. Last night on Question Time someone said it cost around £180 to get from Buxton to London , checking prices you can get tickets from £25. I can get to London for £8 ( around 100 miles ) or even Torquay ( around 120 miles ) for £12.

        Hi,

        I remember our government spending a fortune in order to speed up air flight;

        Pay taxpayers £600m for Concorde, Branson tells BA

        What good all the speed now when the plane isn't allowed to do 5mph? One sad accident was all it took. Now with this high speed train travelling at 200 mph if there's an accident who will walk away unhurt?

        The money would be better spent upgrading our current rail service; our local Kirklees council is so poor it can't afford to place a rubble skip at its tips; many roads are a disgrace and we can't even afford our main local hospital any longer which is threatened with closure meaning cases referred to Halifax;

        Demolishing Huddersfield Royal Infirmary 'will save £175m' - but new PFI deal required to fund changes

        I don't mind progress but at what cost?

        Time for me to go back to sleep but I have a nosy occasionally on this thread. :biggrin:

        Kind regards, Colin.

          Heard it will be done tonight. So you will all have an Independence Day , like the USA.

            Well, none, obviously. But if you take that fearful approach then we'll remove cars from roads, planes from the sky and also existing trains. If accidents happen on these machines then people get hurt; a lot of money is spent on safety and rail is one of the most safety critical and regulated industries there is.

            Exisiting rail service is being worked on but suffered such lack of investment before privatisation that money just evaporates in the upgrade works. It's hugely costly and large portion of that is down to the safety requirements applied now that weren't before. Not saying there aren't better ways of working but it's not as simple as people think it is.
            The rest of it is council spending and management and people are possible aware of my thoughts on councils, management and their general uselessness.

                  Hi,

                  A friend has just mentioned something to me regarding the high speed train; we live in Huddersfield not on the Leeds station platform; what good the high speed train if it takes us two hours due to congestion just to travel to Leeds. Not everyone uses the train.

                  I'd rather have a Black Magic chocolate or bickie and mug of tea john. :biggrin:

                  Kind regards, Colin.

                    Sorry @Retired , but if more people used public transport/cars in a sensible manner then congestion would ease.
                    For instance people who go out shopping or sightseeing, then they should go out after the rush hour. I generally go out around 9.30 when the pressure is eased and fares are cheaper.. Also, commuters who live miles from their place of work, then in my opinion that's their own problem.

                      I was certainly with you, until this statement.

                      A lot of people have no choice as to where they work or live.

                      A similar argument could be used for high speed trains. There's no real need for people to get somewhere faster but connectivity is a different matter. The same as people trying to get to work where they don't live.

                        We have high speed trains down here, they dont go where I want to go so I've never used them, but I think they are well used by those that have to commute.
                        Some pay the extra to get on a train that dont keep stopping.

                        I'd like to see HS2 take off big time, as it might take away some of the cramming that is going on down this part of the country.

                          Actually it'll probably make it worse in the south east! High speed trains are all about connecting major centres, not the travels to outlying towns

                            I'm actually referring to the fact that the capital will be easier to get to from further north, so hopefully the commuter catchment area could expand northwards.

                              I totally agree. I learned after the first morning in London to never again use the underground whilst people were scurrying to work. At one point, that morning, I just flattened myself against a wall to stay the heck out of the way of the hurried flow of commuters. :hate-shocked:

                              After that, I made sure to not go on transit until after about 9:30 a.m. and between 4 and 6 p.m.

                              My sightseeing then didn't get in the way of people trying to make a living. :)

                              I'll raise a glass tonight too :yay:

                                We don't have any public transport near here so it ain't going to affect me even if it does go faster, I don't go to city's now
