@Nikolaos some African songs certainly have a catchy beat. :blue thumb:

Miriam Makeba is one of my favourite singers. Her biggest hit over here was The Click Song where she sang in in the Xhosa language. They make a number of loud clicking noises in their throat when speaking or singing. When I worked out there, nearly 60 years ago, they taught me to make those sounds but I haven't the faintest how to do it now.

Miriam sings in many different languages and has a good range to her voice.

This is a bit different from the other versions you may have heard of it

A popular song from the show/film Fiddler on the Roof

A song written by Leo Fuld after the horrors of the concentration camps (originally written in Yiddish, I think)

    A well known Brazillian song

    And an Indonesian lullaby

@shiney What a varied selection of songs, thanks for sharing! Yes, I'm familiar with "The Click Song", great track. I can certainly appreciate why she's one of your favourite artists. :)

African music is also incredibly diverse and interesting, but the trouble with many African artists is that they're simply so prolific that's it often hard to know where to start when exploring their music! :rolleyespink:

Two albums from Senegalese artists that I absolutely love. "Djam Leelii" is one of the most hypnotic, relaxing albums I've ever heard. Some here may already be familiar with Youssou N'Dour from his collaboration with Neneh Cherry...

My favourite album by an African artist is definitely "Ko-Yan" by the brilliant, innovative Salif Keita! (Mali) Unfortunately the complete album isn't available as one video on YouTube, but the tracks are individually...

There's just something so fluid and bright about that album, I think it's fantastic!

This. Charles Bradley transforming a gentle break-up song into a raw, vulnerable, intense tribute to his late Mother. Love both versions!

            RIP Charles.

One of the joys of a new partner is sharing your favourite music and when there is such a difference in age it is double the fun! Fortunately we have very similar tastes (she had discovered Berlin era Bowie and Joy Division etc before we met) but I have 25 years head start!
Our Sunday mornings include a trip to the Record Exchange on Notting Hill Gate and whilst browsing last Sunday I came across The Wedding Present and thought how on earth did I forget about them:hate-shocked: So when we were cooking dinner that evening it was time to share one of the great indie bands with her. I started off with Brassneck,.........

              Then it was Kennedy............

Of course, it goes both ways. Last week I arrived to a present - You Want It Darker by Leonard Cohen!

Have you listened to Thanks For the Dance ? An album he started before his death and his son, Adam, wrote the music after his death?

I dont think that this or You Want it Darker are his best work. So glad that I saw him live twice. The second time at Liverpool this blew me away - still gives me shivers (after Laughing Lennys intro).

Esther did this good version of Leonard's song.

I don't know whether any of you remember this No 1 hit from 1968. Esther and Abi Ofarim topped the charts here and in the U.S. with it. :rolleyespink: It was the last record played by Radio Caroline before the ship was taken for non-payment of debts!

For some reason the songs by Odetta have come to mind . I don't expect that many, if any, of you know of her.

She performed mainly gospel, spirituals and blues. When seen in person she had a very powerful personality.

This song of hers, written by Bob Dylan, was said to have inspired Elvis with his version
