I have to admit we were worried for our son when he was out there, thankfully he returned safe and well on Saturday. Our real worry was more centred around his accommodation and close environmental contacts as he was staying in hostels and obviously mixing with a lot of other backpackers.

Generally speaking we are not that concerned for our own wellbeing. But....if by chance, our son had decided to pay us a visit I wouldn't have allowed him to see his Grandpa ( my Dad)....even ordinary flu is a potential killer to someone his age.

Coronavirus vs flu: how do they compare?

There's a lot more of toughing key pads and people not washing hands etc so easyer to spread from person to person,

We may have a clean places but things we use daily are not cleaned enough

I know @Jiffy, I always wear gloves when shopping during the winter months, always have done. I shudder at the thought of shopping trolley handles, petrol pump nozzle thingy, and handrails on stairs/ escalators, and buttons at cashpoints and on lifts!!:yikes:

Trouble is this year it looks as if I'll be wearing them all year now.. Hmmmm...I must look out for some pretty summer ones.:blue thumb:
They reckon it'll peak here about June and that we will still be seeing new cases of it here at Christmas!

Definitely on a summer glove hunt mission tonight.

I think the truth hasnt reached us yet regards the scale of this outbreak.
I saw a sad video the other day posted that showed many bodies on pavements, people collapsing in the streets, orange body bags etc.
Might be worth having a fortnights food, some disinfectant ,disposable gloves and masks just in case.

Do you wash them regularly? I wear leather gloves during cold weather but I don't think that I clean them often enough. So shall do so more from now on.

I've split the next quotes/comments into two parts :)

I do wipe my gloves after having touched these but I may consider having cotton gloves in the car for them - I do have cotton gloves in the car for doing things like removing the valve caps on the tyres when checking them at the garage as the caps are always filthy.

I don't used handrails (on escalators I've never liked the fact that the handrail moves at a different speed to the escalator :noidea:), never go to a cash point and rarely use a lift except in hotels and then I've always pushed the buttons with my knuckle.

One of the biggest contact points that people don't tend to think about is at a restaurant. I've worked with Environmental Health with these and the three worst contaminated points are the menu (by far the worst), the sides of the seat (you hold it to pull the seat forward) and the top of the back of the seat (you pull the seat out by it in order to sit down). Although those contact points have high bacteria counts it doesn't mean to say that they are necessarily nasty bacteria.

It's still a reasonable precaution to wash your hands after having handled the menu (I don't bother unless I may be handling my food with my hands - bread rolls, poppadoms etc.).

In a lot of the local Indian restaurants I have eaten in when in Singapore they actually have wash basins in the main part of the restaurant - but they don't use cutlery and everything is eaten by hand. Always put your food into your mouth with your right hand. :blue thumb:

Yes @shiney I wash my 'shopping gloves' after each outing, they aren't worn for warmth ( I have others for that) so they are easily washed and dried over a heater as they are only cotton ones.

I try not to hold on to rails but since having the bones in both feet surgically fused for some weird reason I feel unbalanced coming down stairs and escalators so I have to lightly make contact with the sides of them ( not necessarily the rails themselves to steady myself.

We only eat out a couple of times a month...and I use antibacterial wipes....on the cutlery...take your point on that so will use them on hands too from now on.:dbgrtmb:,

Why your right hand?? I would tend to think it better to use your left...if you were right handed that is.:dunno:

To put it crudely - you are expected to wipe your bum with your left hand and eat with your right (not at the same time :nonofinger: ). So it's considered unclean to eat with your left hand.

Isn't it interesting that only Chinese restaurants give you hot wipes following a meal, that I know of.

I hate touching things out in public too and have always said it was my opinion that is how viruses are passed along.

Oh, personally I would never 'go' when out for a meal. I seldom use any toilet outside of home. But obviously being right handed everything else would get touched by the hand. Really can't see what difference it would/ should make. When eating best practice is to have both clean.

It's a very ancient tradition in the sub-continent and considered very rude. As is allowing the soles of your feet to be pointed towards someone (or just pointing with your foot) in many Arab countries and South Asia.

A lot of countries have different taboos. Some are superstition and others are cultural/religious. Picking your nose in public is acceptable in some countries :rolleyespink:. Whistling in public in some countries is supposed to be bad luck. Shaking hands across a threshold is a no no in Russia. Etc.

Well at least the modern plastic notes can go through a washing machine. Another take on money laundering.
No problem touching things, people is a different matter though a complete no no, unless I've known them well for years.
