This is wonderful Woo! They are gorgeous! I've kept (& bred) budgies for many years too, i started off colony breeding then moved to cage breeding as the genetics fascinated me, also its far safer for them. I've had a fair few other species too over the years but its the budgies that have my heart, I'd never be without them :)

Have you been in the fancy long Woo? Best hobby ever!

Thats great you still have the budgie bug  I've had them for 22 years, theres not been a single year without them. I just have oldies now though as I've not bred them for a number of years & as a result the numbers have slowly dwindled, I'm down to just a handful of very old girls now (was 30 plus at one point) I'll never be without them though & will definitely start again with some fresh new blood at some point

                  They all look good Woo...:)

Had been keeping an eye out for someone local selling good looking young birds at a reasonable price, but nothing outstanding.

Wish we would have done something a bit earlier though as now with lockdown cannot really get the materials to make a cage or aviary, think a few chirping friends would have been very welcome in these times.

Your post made me look on the web again and these two young birds and cage are going for just £25 as seems the owners now find they have alergy problems.
Its about a hours drive away, but wonder /doubt if we could manage to get there, not sure how the police are acting up here?

                  ah well .....:frown:

Good afternoon @ricky101 my friend yes I purchased 4 of my show birds from a show breeder who said that they were the only ones that he had and wanted to get some new stock,I believed that I was off to a good start,I paired them off and all went well and they produced 4 eggs and 2 eggs , but then the cock birds ate the eggs, and then I knew why he wanted to get rid of them,I tried again and the same thing happened so please be careful when you purchase any birds,I have now given the two cock birds away and have replaced them and I shall be pairing them off in May,there's a moral in there somewhere, but you live and learn:smile:

Please make sure they are ringed and that way you will at least know their true age,I have 12 birds now and they are all OK

                      Hi Woo,

Thats rather despicable of that breeder to off load such stock to you.

Had earlier thought about asking you, if you or your breeder contact knew of any good breeders up our way to buy some good stock from, but think we better pass on that !!

Seems £20 - £40 is a typical price for young birds you see advertised, but like many other pets these days, you have to assume they are just bred for profit with little regard for their welfare.

Your birds are looking good Woo. :blue thumb:

@ricky101 my late mum bred budgies and parakeets for 30 years plus. So thinking on that, it may be worth your while contacting a local Budgerigar and Foreign Bird Society. Or failing that, you could pick up a copy of Cage & Aviary Birds magazine that will give you names of breeders.

@Sheal - Thanks, think a trip to WH Smith will be needed to find a copy of that magazine, cannot say I have noticed it on the usual big supermarket shelves.

Not sure when we will be able to get out and about though, just once a week to the supermarket with masks and gloves at the moment  :old:

We have a planted tropical fish tank which has a very calming effect, but not quiet the same as a pet you can touch and interact with.

@ricky101 you may be able to order the magazine from a local shop or buy it online.

My mum had a fish tank too (I was reared in a menagerie), it was the size of a coffin and looked like one. Made of wood it had the glass sealed inside with a large oval window at the front to see the fish. My dad had to reinforce the floor boards to take the weight when it was filled with water. :)

My apologies @wiseowl for diversifying. :)
