I bought this today. I have no idea what variety it is. How do I pot it on?. I only have multipurpose compost. Thanks.

It's a Christmas cactus , a delightful and easily flowering plant. It enjoys more watering and humidity than the usual cacti plants, and direct sunlight can scorch it.

If you re-pot it now it will probably drop all the flowers so I'd suggest to leave it until it has flowered and rested, until about March- April. MPC with some grit should be just fine.

It's also easy and fun to propagate in the spring, break off a young "leaf" and push into gritty compost and keep slightly moist. :)

@Selleri Thanks. I bought for a present. It'll stay how it is for now. I'll play about with it at a later date.

This is exactly the same plant as above but in a ceramic pot. I shall soon be thinking about potting it on. It was a bought as a gift and I want to do be able to pass it on in a more permanent state.

A strange question but could I use cat litter as grit? I have that already in abundance. I was thinking that I could also put a layer of it in the bottom of the ceramic pot. This might, in theory at least, help with drainage and increase humidity?

Just a few drops of water over the last 2 weeks and flowers! My cactus garden in a box bought in Arizona is still doing well,
