I try not to think about this because it makes my blood boil. Being furloughed means you cannot do any paid work for your company, so with this mind the very day the company put us on furlough they asked us if we would "volunteer" to empty two containers full of shower trays (around 1500 in total) in early May, so they want us to empty two of these

coming from China, they are 6 weeks on the water so they would have been manufactured in mid to late February, we lost a lot of jobs initially with these imports but this seems like a sick joke but sadly it isn't.

My moan is this, what do members think?

Scottish tycoon Duncan Bannatyne has blasted an airline boss calling for a £7.5 billion taxpayer bailout to save the aviation industry from collapse.

The gym chain owner and former Dragons’ Den panelist says the taxpayer needs to bail out “the poor, the starving, the ill and the disabled”, not billionaire owners of airlines.

His comments came after Peter Norris, chairman of Virgin Atlantic’s majority shareholder, said he will write to the Prime Minister on Monday to warn that the sector needs immediate financial aid to survive.

My personal take on this is, here is a man worth Billions of Pounds with a Private Island and he wants help, I won't write what I think of this person for the fear of getting banned on this site.

I'm sorry @john558 , I just don't get what your moan is. I totally agree with him. These airline bosses are paying themselves millions in wages and bonuses etc and then asking for help. Why should the taxpayer bail them out ?

Where is Duncan Bannatyne asking for money ?

It's not always easy to get the sense of what someone is saying but I think @john558 is actually slagging off Peter Norris if I'm reading it right.

Hi KFF, that's my gripe, why should Branson get any Government hand out, Duncan Bannatyne is not asking for money, he's saying Branson shouldn't get any money

There's no such thing as 'government money', they're not paying out their own pockets, it's taxpayer's money.

If businesses, self-employed, banks, pension funds, laid off employees, etc. all have their losses made good, who's left to foot the bill - the unemployed, sick and pensioners?

The whole point of my post was should any money where ever it came from be paid to the Billionaire Richard Branson.

If it's only two containers, how long would this take ?

Wouldn't you be helping the company survive and doing your bit for the community spirit as you're getting paid 80% of your wages for sitting at home anyway.

@KFF OUCH, believe you me I'd prefer to be earning my full wages not sitting at home anyway, I've been working there 16 years and never had a sickie in 16 years, not so naive to not know that looking after the company I'm looking after my own job(but that's what the lads who got finished because of the imports also said) it'll take roughly 90 mins per container and yes I'll be one of the "volunteers" and we'll shove them with the other 5000 or so we have in stock even though there's no orders going out but still seems like a sick joke to me regardless.

Not that Branson or any of the big bosses needs any form of defending from little ol' me but the point of big companies (and small) asking the government to support them is not to line the pockets of the bosses. It's to support the company so that there will be jobs to go back to when the crisis is over.

Most of the bosses of the big companies will be OK whether the company survives or not. The employees will all be out of jobs if the companies don't survive.

So, as an example (according to reports), Branson has already put in 60 million of his personal money to try and prop up the company. Virgin Atlantic only own 51% of the company and if the government don't help support it then nearly 9,000 people will lose their jobs.

With some small businesses, if they don't get support (even if they do, it is too slow in coming!) then the owners will go bankrupt, possibly lose their homes, and all their employees will be out of work.

These businesses are unlikely to be able to restart afterwards.

Companies big and small usually owe the banks etc. for their loans that they have (Virgin owes many millions) and they could seize assets if the business goes down (who wants to buy useless planes?). In the end we will be the ones to suffer for it as a knock on effect of the whole tumbling house of cards.

i know lots of people that run businesses and most of them are really worrying about their staff as well as themselves and are trying to think of ways to help out.
