Hi folks, my niece has just moved to a new house and wants to know if anyone can ID this shrub. My initial thoughts are Physocarpus, possibly 'Darts Gold' or a Viburnum spp. Leaves are just emerging so not obvious. She lives in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

    Thanks

Yes, I had thought about Ribes but the leaves look yellow and I wasn't sure they had a cultivar with yellow leaves. Maybe just because they are young.

No, I wasn't aware of a yellow-leaved cultivar either, but apparently they do exist. Photos of this one don't look quite as yellow but as you say, probably due to time of year and leaf colour seems to intensify eventually...

      Just one problem.
Ribes sanguineum .....I would also expect to see flowers on it now as flowers appear just before the leaves.

Maybe Physocarpus opulifolius Darts Gold which flowers in June..:heehee: Yep, I think you've got it right Silver Surfer, physocarpus makes more sense and leaf colour is closer.

You'll know if its a Physocarpus if the old old / bark starts peeling which it appears to be doing , it not called ninebark ( common name ) for no reason .

Thanks everyone, I did think initially it could be P. Darts Gold as I mentioned in my original post. I think I'll go with that and ask to be kept updated by my niece with more photos as it develops.

          Cheers
