    Hi,

My magnolia tree has a decent size shoot growing from the base. As yet I'm not sure if it is growing out of the tree or its a seedling, because its very close to the trunk base. Before we do anything, if is growing from the trunk base, is it possible to cut it off and pot it up?

Could it be grafted, might be from the rootstock.

Ahhh, never thought of that, but the tree must be about 27 year old though. The next time I'm out I'll have a proper look.

By the way, the bark on one of the main branches is coming off. Don't think it's canker, because there's no fungus growing. Any idea?

If the bark is dropping off I'm guessing that branch is going to die back.

If there is a problem with the main tree it could point out, possibly, why the rootstock would be shooting.

Hi @clum111, the best thing would be some photos, always easier for people to give advice based on them as opposed to a description. :)

      Update.

Sorry @Nikolaos I didn't realised you had messaged:(

The shoot I digged around & found it wasn't attached to the tree, so managed to pull out & potted it up.

The bark issue. We think we know what's the problem. Wind... Before I bought my house, there was a big hedge in the front garden & it would have protected the magnolia. When I redesigned the garden, I had the hedges took out. So, as we have strong winds where I live, the bark has come off where the wind hits it. IMG_4569.JPG
