    Hi fellow gardeners,

I've decided to create a mini meadow at the bottom of my garden and figuring out the best way to prepare the ground.

I've bought a clay soil meadow mix. This morning I mowed and heavily scarified the meadow patch (only about 4 square metres). I've tried to avoid the poor daffs (which you can see beneath the apple tree).

I've scratched up the ground, but there are still patches of grass and some weeds - and some fading daffs. I'm not sure how to proceed.

Should I scarify further and remove everything? Or it is alright to sow the meadow mix directly into the scarified patch and hope for the best?

What a gorgeous day here in Kent!

    Keep healthy and happy gardening
    Fin

I've never tried it as I regard it as really hard to do well ... what little I know suggests that the ground needs to be as poor as possible - not fertilising the lawn and frequent mowing and removing the clippings or deliberately growing a hungry crop like Rape or Mustard the year before, and then incorporating Yellow Rattle (Rhinanthus minor) into the sowing mix to weaken any residual grass.

I would expect that the Meadow Seed mix would benefit from cultivating the area as it would be for a new lawn seed bed ...

    Maybe there are shortcuts though.

Thanks, I think I've got a challenge on my hands. I have to clear lots of grass, weeds first and then sow these seeds and hope for the best  :spinning:

Thanks for you feedback - I've bought the seeds so I'll give it a go

    All the best
