This is something I have tried before ,but what I would like to know is how others make it and store it.
At the moment I have a large watering can with a net bag inside full of shredded comfrey so I can tip out in small doses when needed.

If I remember rightly Monty Don used a plastic tub with a lid (like what you get contract paint in) ripped up the comfrey leaves added some water put a brick or something to weigh the leaves down then put the lid on, then when it was ready poured it into empty plastic milk bottles.

I make it in an old plastic dustbin, fill with leaves (no need to chop up) then add a coule of buckets of water. Leave for a few weeks until the smell is unbearable, then it's ready. I scoop out half a pint and add to a two gallon watering can. It is awfully smelly. Water into the soil don't get any on the plants

Did I mention the obnoxious effluvium ?

          me too

The alternative is a pipe, stuffed with leaves and a weight, to "compress" out the juice. That is very concentrated, and doesn't smell. Too much effort for me to bother with ... but "The Smell" :frown:

I find if I (also) put the stalks in they are all the "bits" left behind, whereas the leaves pretty much disintegrate. Could perhaps put the stalks through the shredder, but they are beneficial on the compost heap too, and I have more Comfrey than I need so ... I take the easy route

Terry King has an astonishing array of feeds in his videos. "I've got about a gazzilion banana skins in this one" ... where did he get them from I wonder? I eat two Bananas a day, and never thought to separately chuck the skins in a bucket-with-lid until they oozed. Perhaps I should ...

I've mixed Comfrey with Nettles, Seaweed and Pee. It was so stinky that people walking along the road past my plot were commenting on it after I'd watered plants the other side of the hedge.

I have a metal drum I got from work. I fitted a tap and put the leaves and stalks in weighed down with an old crock pot and full with water. Leave for a few weeks and then use it through the tap. I will have to do some repair work on the tap joint as I stood on it yesterday :wallbanging: . I do need to do it this week so I can get some brewing ready for tons and cucumbers.

Kristen will send you a root, if you ask him nicely :) ("Ask nicely" = "PM an address" :) )

a long long time ago ... I was well chuffed to have got some Comfrey seed dirt cheap in an end of season sale. Big mistake ... I still have it springing up around the garden where a plant accidentally flowered once upon a time, and a seed got into the compost heap. Its only doing what it is supposed to do, of course, but unfortunately it is very good at it, and making Comfrey Fertiliser out of plants that carry seed will make that far worse IME

For anyone planning on getting some avoid seed-grown at all costs and get the sterile Bocking-14. All the "old boys" on the allotment will have that and likely to be happy to give you a few roots (which is all you need, even bought mailorder they don't usually come as plants, or if they do probably "unnecessarily expensive")

I do hope that was typo for "Toms and Cucumbers" rather than typo for "Tons of Cucumbers"? :heehee:

I make it in a plastic dustbin too, unfortunately Carol let the dogs access to the veg plot and they've eaten most of my comfrey. :wallbanging:
