hi all, im a little confused as to why my alderman pea plants are not flowering.
first year growing this variety and they are now 5 feet tall but cant understand why there are no flowers, 1 or 2 are starting to flower right at the top but nothing from ground up until about 5 feet. will they flower further down the plant at some point or have i done something wrong, was looking for a bumper crop this year but looks like im not gonna get many not a happy bunny :frown: peas.jpg lol.
also can i pinch out the top so they dont get too overgrown and tangled as already at top of trellis, will this help them to bush out more further down and produce flowers and fruit any advice please. see attached photo.
    thanks john

hi spruce yes fed once with miracle gro about 5 weeks ago now now big mistake as too much nitrogen and fed last week with a dilute potash not sure on that one, maybe no feeding for a while what do you think ? just remembered mixed in some manure prior to planting out was advised to just topdress with blood fish and bone and water it in whats your thinking also do you think i should pinch out the top or just leave them

.... they are doing what they should and you have another 4 /5 weeks before they flower.

I would just water for now ...no more feeding , with peas its a about the preperation with the soil before you sow to be honest I have never ever thought about feeding peas after they have been sown ... Potash is fine for flowers and fruit ... the more you feed, you will just get more growth and a very little peas ...
      Keep us all updated

Pinch out half of them and see what happens you may get more or less(who knows) which will make this post even more intresting , the variety is old so may produce more flowers at the top ?

Alderman are an old fashioned variety that don't start to flower until quite tall. They have good flavour and crop over several weeks. In dry weather they appreciate plenty of water, a good soak once or twice a week rather than a sprinkle every day.
