What Jobs Are We Doing In The Garden Today 2020

Been doing a little bit of foraging in between the rain. Peanut and hazelnut

 

Just been lounging around all morning while it rained , so I been looking at a catalogue of plants instead for Dove cottage nursery , they don't do online so no impulse buys but I were weighing up risking the journey cause I've spotted a few a like .

Instead I stuffed my face and watched the football for a while. The weather did give me a chance earlier to take a wheelbarrow piled up full of plants for my mum . And I divided my Allium Globemaster which I've not been looking forward to, 16 bulbs I lifted ( I planted 3 originally ) replanted all back into the small border should be around 20 ish bulbs in there now nicely spaced out. I am a notorious allium mass murder in my garden they are always getting chopped and hacked to death but I didn't stab or chop one I deserve a medal / food for that feat .

Also working in the same bed ( the hot border ) I planted out 4 Achillea Walther Funcke and the two Kniphofia mango I picked up last year for this bed. Replanted one of the Lobelia Tanna while I were at it, the heavens then opened torrential rain so a mad dash to pack up and get back inside

 

Just trying to keep some of the blueberry pots standing up because of the winds that have got up again.

 

Nothing. I cannot get out of the door for the gale. And when I managed to go out to tie things up y' day I got literally soaked to the skin. Today, being Sunday, I was planning to tour the estate with a basket, elegantly picking peas and broad beans and leafy greens for my Sunday lunch! So a ready meal with now be partaken of. Sunday is postponed. At least the garden is getting... watered...

 

Yesterday I rejigged the troughs from the greenhouse rain gutters and they worked out champion for last night's unexpected rain. The big rain barrel is 3/4 full which is more than has ever happened before. Then I did some weeding.

Today I am finishing the legs for the collapsible staging in the greenhouse that has a heater. I'm using old metal tubing and where the pipe cutter won't work, I've got a lot of hack saw work to do. Then will do some weeding..

 

Deadheading, staking and believe it or not ...some watering!!

Might do some more seed sowing this afternoon...not too keen being in the greenhouse though when we have strong winds.

 

Watered the polyanthus, containers and the blueberries. Tried to put back the fleece on the blueberries. Yesterday had some heavy weight fleece arrive, it's a lot better than what we get from the gc, try to put that on tomorrow.

 

It's windy again so only picking the currants and gooseberries.

 

If and when I can get out there? Braved it once to try to rescue the fallen pea vines at the back but got chased out by the gale..

HOPING to pick greens and maybe a few peas and broad beans but not in this weather. They are all doing what they are good at; growing and filling. I am not needed!

 

Hoping to get some shredding done, will pick peas and raspberries later. Water tomatoes and sideshoot, water rest of greenhouse plants.

 

I'll not be doing much today other than picking broken plants up , the weather is awful raining very windy . It already took the top off one my Brugmansia standards and the other one nearly off as well . It not really stopped raining now for nearly three days if I hear united utilities moaning on the radio about water I am going to flip my lid.

 

Despite the wind, and worrying about my mum, who fractured her hip yesterday morning (operation today went well, praise the Lord!), I got out in the garden and got stuff done. In fact, whilst waiting for news, I found that turning compost was a good distraction....

So, the second bay had been emptied into the final bay. Apart from the top 6” or so, it was all pretty much ready, so I’ve covered it, with sacks and various “bits” to keep it nice and moist. The second bay was then repaired, as I find the sides tend to sag a little, after a year or two. I started to move the first bay into the second bay, but found my back tightening up, so paused for the day.

I watered the veg beds, picked a handful of mangetout peas, and pulled a lot of meadowsweet out of the pond, as it was clogging it up, and threatening to take over the less vigorous plants. The blanket weed was also growing well in the roots, so by removing the meadowsweet, I could also get the blanket weed... Spent water lily flowers were also removed. I finished up by tying in a young stem on my climbing iceberg rose, and watering the pots next to the house.

Sorry to hear about your mum Sian. It's a worrying time for you and I hope she soon recovers
I have a close family member in hospital (9 weeks now) and I find great comfort and solace from my garden. The worst thing is not being able to visit her. To be ill and in hospital is bad enough but not being allowed to see your loved ones makes it even worse.
