I have just taken on an allotment, which hasn't been used for three or four years, and now have a big pile of weeds for composting. There is an old (and very fruitful) apple tree on the plot and I couldn't dig into the area immediately around it for the roots so I piled the weeds up very close to the tree. As I can't use the ground for growing I am thinking of creating compost bins here - is there any reason why this would be problematic for the tree?

It shouldn`t be a problem for the tree, but probably will be a problem for you when it comes to pruning the tree and harvesting the fruit.

Thanks for that, you have put my mind at ease. Fortunately (I think?) the tree was severely cut back two or three years ago, by the "allotment committee" - you can see that it only has the one main branch growing out to the right. They said it had 'gone mad' so cut it back quite hard. I have some long ladders so should be OK with the pruning and harvesting. I was more concerned with causing problems with a compost bin so close but feel a lot happier now.
