Silly question, as I’m sure you would have if you could have....

...but do you have access to a hazel? Or maybe you haven’t yet cut back a mock orange/deutzia/forsythia after flowering? You could use the stems as supports. It’s my understanding (I can’t grow anything as delicate as a dahlia here!) that the support doesn’t have to be as high as the plant, but just high enough to support the body/bulk of the plant.

.....and the reason that cutting back philadelphus sprung to mind? That’s what I’ve done in the garden today! Lots of woody stems, some over a metre long - wish I could wish them over to you, @Selleri !

I’ve also cut the long grass on the wild bank below the patio bed, to allow a little air into the cowslip plants, and so I could see where I could safely stand to fight my way in to cut back the brambles a little.
Why do I refer to some bits of the garden as wild areas? The whole lot is running riot!! After all, I’ve fought my way under the squirrel-planted walnut tree (going to get a good harvest this year!) to get to the philadelphus, and now it’s cut back, I have a good view on the bird-planted mountain ash, that’s got some lovely orange-red berries already...

Today I got the new plants in the border that the big ugly conifers were removed from. All reccomended by members on here. In went the smoke bush ( for grandad) which was nice :wub2: then followed by the Mock orange, Red Robin, viburnum and also managed to slip in a sneaky Hydrangea. The soil is in pretty good condition after the conifers as I'd put some manure in a couple of weeks ago and we've had lots of rain. Got rid of a rather large rogue mushroom  then sat back and admired. It should look lovely in a few years when they mature.

I'm forever digging out small walnut trees but we are really puzzled how they keep appearing. None of the neighbours withing half a mile have a walnut tree

No gardening for me as I'm hors de combat due to some nasty bitey having gotten me between the toes and I now have a blister one inch by half an inch between the toes. :noidea:

The squirrel must have planted some acorns in my lawn because i've got 2 oak tree seedlings growing in my lawn but there's no big trees around here.

Cut down nettles at one side of garden as the cyclamen are showing signs of flower buds. Nettles to compost heap, which is heating up nicely after being turned over and watered yesterday. Then potted up delivery of bulbs. Removed turf from area of new flower bed.

If only. I have one cut branch of tall enough privet but it's too bendy. I'll carry on with the hunt. [IMG]

Planted out divided primroses in the wooded area beside the new path.
Dug up large clumps of acanthus which had seeded in the wrong place. A prickly job:frown:
Staked perennial sweet peas that were attaching themselves to my box hedge and now it looks like I have a new tree growing in the garden.

I bought these last year and in the end it was a good investement. The price is a bit steep but canes have plenty of uses in the garden and, if kept reasonably dry, last quite long.

Actually I ended up making some hanging frames with them, for the house, but don't tell anybody :D
