Help with figs

I have a fig tree that produced a lot of figs last year which did not ripen before winter. This year there are masses of figs again but a lot of very small new figs keep growing. Should these small figs be removed or are they the 'starters' for next years crop? There seems to be a lot of conflicting ideas around so I'm confused. Thanks

The fig is a basic brown turkey. Could almost be a pun after last year.

 

Right, well I have brown Turkey and mine are just about starting to ripen.

The small ones that might be forming now wont make it through the winter and will fall off next spring, the overwintering ones that do go on to maturity are hardy recognisable at leaf fall as they are just tiny buds.
Having said that you should have a crop of pretty much full sized ones on there now just waiting to ripen.

Hi @Greybelle, have you got photos of your tree/the figs? I've got a young Brown Turkey and like @pete says you do tend to get waves of fruit - we've got a couple that are just coming up to ripe now, and the rest are tiny <2cm fruits that definitely won't ripen by autumn (but would do fine in warmer climates!)

 

Just a quick picture of mine hopefully shows the fruit that will ripen and the small ones that won't.
