Saturday night they all settled down for a sleep. You can just about see all four of them.

At Sunday lunchtime it was not crowded any more as the three bigger ones flew the nest but the runt didn't quite manage it. He fell/fluttered to the ground and cheeped away unhappily (anthropomorphising) so I put him back on top of the hedge (couldn't reach into the nest).

      Not too happy
      P1490280.JPG

But he perked up and the parents came back to feed him
      P1490281.JPG

And by evening he was more active
      P1490282.JPG

This morning, early, he was cheeping away but no parents came to feed him

and at 7.45 he flew away. :blue thumb:

At that age it would probably still be fed by it's parents and will still be around for a while.

I've seen him and one of the other babies today. One on a lilac tree and the other in a hazel tree. Haven't spotted the other two yet.

That last one didn't seem the least bit bothered when I walked near him but I think he's used to me. He's the one I picked up and perched back on his hedge as the cat was roaming around.

Just spotted it again. :blue thumb:

            P1490285.JPG

The only way to get a shot of it was through the window as he's only 12" from it and can't be seen from the other side.

An Eastern Phoebe, these little guys eat yellow jackets and I had to have medical attention this week for a yellow jacket sting, therefore these have become my favorite species. ;)

Sorry to hear you've been stung @hydrogardener. What is a yellow jacket please?

Thanks, Sheal. They are wasps that, unlike honey bees, can sting multiple times injecting venom. It attacked me as I was reaching to pick up a hose in the garden. Within 48 hours my arm was badly swollen and the doctor prescribed a steroid and antibiotic.
I have seen the Eastern Phoebe eat them and I wondered how they don't get stung. They seem to hold them in their beak and snap their heads sideways like a whip several times. Whatever they do, it works. Also, yellow jackets live in large colonies underground and you really do not want a nest on your property as they are nasty critters.

These Chipmunks are just too darn cute. It appears to be doing an impression of Quasimoto.

This flew out of a flower whilst it was being watered. Not sure what it is.

Ooooo that sounds nasty! They're obviously more lethal than the wasps we have here. Ours also sting multiple times.

I agree with you there. :)Looking at its face I assume they store food in their pouches like hamsters?
