I want to grow a Pineapple.

If you dribble some soil in the upper part of a flowering pineapple, would it grow a baby from it's head? Layered pineapple? Dare you Pete, it has to be tried!

 

Well you dont have to, if you leave it on the plant until it is well ripened it will usually already be showing roots from the leafy top knot.
The last one I bought just rotted, I think as it was pretty green when I bought it, it was probably never going to root anyway.
Usually if you strip a few leaves away at the bottom the roots are already forming.

 

Its been a long wait but at last its ripe, it was actually dripping juice, so I cut it today.
It has a very large top, so guessing I might have got the feeding a bit wrong.

Tried some of it a while ago, very sweet and juicy.

The sense of achievement more than makes up for the time and patience. A long time since I first grew one successfully - can't recall how it tasted but I do remember eating it anyway and I definitely didn't share it with anyone either !!

 

Digging up this old thread after failing my 5th attempt to root a crown, stern forbidding from the fruit eating part of the family to ever buy a pineapple again (joining the mango and avocado list) and to share a good story of the pineapple history in the UK The rise, fall, and rise of the status pineapple

 

But pineapple is the one that is possible, mango and avocado just get too big.

 

There is no such a thing as "too big" plant. There are just low ceilings.

You can get a Pineapple at Asda for £0.95
When they were first grown in Europe in the 1700's, it was virtually worth it's weight in gold. Special hothouses were built, called pinery's I think, to slowly grow them. You can still see carved pineapples on the gate posts of older houses, a real status symbol in the 1800's.
