Hi All, I have a new rose growing in a container. Its growing and flowering well but recently I've noticed some buds that look like this. Any advice please. Will Rose Clear help?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi,

Its probably 'Balling' caused by weather conditions.

No treatment, if the buds are going mouldy then cut them off, or if like you pic, pull back those outer green parts and the first few outer petals and it may open infront of your eyes !

Thanks for replying, have to admit that I had wondered that but my experience of balling has been that the bud sticks completely closed. These all look as though the end of the bud has been snipped (or nibbled) straight across. I have cut off all the buds that are exhibiting the symptom so I've done what you suggest.
      I'll see how it goes.
      Thanks again.

See what you mean now, it does look like something may have chewed it.
Putting the buds in the dustbin incase anything has gone inside and re-emerges to affect others buds.

@wiseowl aka Woo will probably be able to help when he sees your post.

        Hi Woo,

Well while deadheading this morning we came across a couple of buds more like @fred88 showed.

Unlike Balling we had seen on our climbing Iceberg, more turning brown and looking a bit unhealthy, these on a small shrub rose also looked like the very center was damaged or eaten.

Must assume we had noticed the Balling problem at earlier stage than before.

        Live and learn ! :)

For some reason or other. Whilst respecting my honourable friends comments. Perhaps as a plant pathologist. I have some reservations with this one.

If I may. Flower or bud balling , being the common term used. Yes, this is mainly induced by wet conditions affecting flowering buds/blooms. It is perhaps more noticeable with roses. In this case. The breaking open of the flower bud, tends to reach a stage where the most outer petals have become lossened and correspondingly the whole bud is opening up. It is accepted that at this point, the weather conditions step in. Basically the offending rain now has ample access to just about all of the breaking bud. Rapid rotting process takes place. This causes the familiar tea bag effect. Commonly known as, Balling.

In this particular instance. Note. The bud is in it's infancy of breaking open. Rain/water damage would have been avoided due to the closeness of the petals etc.

That is why I suggested a later photo.

Good morning @ricky101 my friend the only other time that I have seen this is with thrips,
This damage is generally characterised by deformed buds that may only partially open, or even fall from the plant before full bloom.

ps.and this is another reason not to water from above as sometimes the Rose buds get to wet.

Hello lovely gardeners, I hope everyone is fine and enjoying nice weather!
I need your help: on my young rose there is a foam. I washed it once and it does appear again. What is that? 5210A754-0A88-4486-A96D-7763EC53CA8A.jpeg C9667A0D-7EF3-4B62-A7B6-21D2D21B23F0.jpeg D4DC679F-0252-4479-9BB3-F3AECDB74A6D.jpeg

Good evening @Yana my friend it looks like Cuckoo Spit to me caused by Spittlebugs common name Froghoppers each blob contains a creamy white insect nymph up to 4-6mm (¼in) long

Apart from producing the "Spit" these insects have no effect on your Rose they can be wiped off
by hand or or dislodged with a jet of water from your garden hose there is no need to use any insecticide or anything else hope this of some help:smile:

@Yana it would have be better if you have another question to start a new thread as if it is just added on to an existing thread question it might get missed;)
