    I have found that with Echinacea it is best to divide them every two or three years. We have had them for a number of years now. The large white Echinacea will be divided into three plants in late October and we will do the same with the Gaillardia aristata next to it.

                  @ARMANDII My echinacea magnus are a good 5 year old at least , I do keep expecting them to kick the bucket but they have returned again this year. I am changing them next year to Echinacea pallida which is supposed to be a true long term perennial.

                    Thanks for that info, Perki. As you know my garden soil is very sandy and light loam in which for some reason I hardly have ever got any Echinaceas to last more than two seasons. Rudbeckias do very well and establish quickly which is why I've introduced another 9 or so pots of them into the borders. Monarda do very well in my large 24" pots but Echinaceas..........:wallbanging:
                    I'll keep chasing the challenge of getting Echinaceas to be permanent in the borders,

                    so I might give Echinacea "Pallida" a try and we can compare notes on how we both do (echoes of Alliums:heehee:). I've put it on the "Wishlist" on several growers to see if I can get it for Autumn planting. I might also try " Magnus" as an experiment to see if that will last long than two season.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:
