I recently followed very good advice from this forum and successfully air-layered two shoots off a houseplant I had that had got very straggly. So now I have two healthy new plants growing.

I retained the cut trunk to see if it would shoot leaves from the stem. It hasn't but, instead, it is throwing up a new plant from the roots. So, my question is do I leave it grow and retain the trunk or should I cut the trunk now down to soil level? What would be best ??

Also, is the plant a Yucca or a Dracaena ??

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Think we would let that shoot grow a bit bigger before doing anything.

Once its a decent size, say 150mm tall, we would be tempted to take it out of the pot and see if the shoot has developed its own root system, if so then with a sharp blade detatch it from the mother plant and pot it up by itself.

You could cut the old stem down but its roots could impede the new shoot etc.

      Looks like Yucca elephantpies.
I'd follow what Ricky says but I still think the old stem might yet reshoot if it is still firm and not withering.

Thank you very much. Just looked up Yucca Elephantipes and yes, it certainly is that.
So now I'll wait a few months to see if anything shoots from original stem otherwise I'll follow your advice and cut new shoot if it has it's own root system.

      Thanks again for your advice.
