Well everyone, I have removed most of the bad lower leaves, topped the container right to the brim with mpc, watered it for ages (gradually), added four cane sticks to the top and fed them with a 4.5Ltr watering can of all purpose Miracle-Gro. I’ve wheeled it to where we (might) get some late afternoon sun if the clouds part here and there.

It’s not so blustery now and on closer inspection there are quite a few shoots pushing up and new leaves too .

Awww @Purple Streaks that is so kind of you, I am keen on the idea of an Indian Summer and if, say in a week or so, the plants are looking happier and growing or even flowering I may well try your idea of creating more depth to the container.

We do get quite a lot of pollinating insects, the tomatoes, courgettes and cucumbers have had no trouble there this year and I have herbs in pots spread all over the garden so if the flowers come yes I may just get a bean or two .

Will update thread with Beans progress and thanks to everyone for their input. Photo after intervention!

Update: so the Indian Summer @JR predicted has arrived (or is this just normal autumn after the cold snap we had?) and there are flowers on the beans yay :)

There are lots of flower buds too. I am a little confused as there are white and yellow flowers? I am not complaining, such a thrill just to get the plants growing and flowering. Will I get any beans? I very much doubt it but you just never know what nature will do.

Hope the sun is shining where you are.

I'd guess the yellow flowers are just budding white one's.
But anyways, so long as little beans develop then all will be good.
You'll need the bees to polinate them of course, and when the beans start to form a tomato feed will do good.
I'm still picking loads and I'm very pleased, particularly because I'm growing 'prize winner' which is an old cultivar that was popular in both world wars.
They taste superb, freeze well, and no string so happy days!
Having said that there are many very good varieties to grow.. I've already got some 'Stardust' (hybrid french x runner) to grow next Spring.

You may be lucky with pollination as there are still lots of wasps around and they do a good job of it.

Thanks @JR and @shiney I do hope the pollinators are still around in this area, the tomatoes and cucumbers have been great this year, but I only have flowers in pots in the front garden, all that flowers in the back garden (where the blimin’ dogs are!) is the Jasmine and I’ve let the garlic chives flower this year. My neighbour has just had his buddleia chopped right back so no flowers there. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for beans though and feed as advised at the first sign of a bean :)

Both peas and beans have failed for me this year so I may take @JR recommendation on ‘Stardust’ for next year, hopefully we will have moved and will be able to plant in the ground at last.

            Happy gardening.

                YAY :)
                Success, we have beans!
Thank you everyone for your advice, the plants are now looking healthy and we can see some time little beans, so happy :)

Pollinators must still be around, maybe not for much longer as we have just four more days of this warm, dry weather predicted then rain and a drop in temperature. Now to get them little beans fat with tomato feed, water and find somewhere a bit protected from the weather for them (bespoke container is on wheels luckily).

Maybe only get enough beans for one meal, not financially a success, but it is rewarding to bring it back from the edge and see it flourish.

Thank you GC community and have a good weekend.
