    Hello all,

I have been trying to figure out what this hedge is called and have failed. Can anyone here help, please? I have tried to cut it back but my hedge trimmer simply shreds the ends of it - any suggestions for why this may be happening? Could be a rubbish strimmer, or trying to cut too high...

    Many thanks! 07F64E64-7875-497E-B643-DBCFE332B7DB.jpeg A665CE75-E5A2-4946-936B-8243BD48DE82.jpeg 41846B9D-CD49-4BC5-B2D7-2C9B1CC2CF5A.jpeg 07F64E64-7875-497E-B643-DBCFE332B7DB.jpeg A665CE75-E5A2-4946-936B-8243BD48DE82.jpeg 41846B9D-CD49-4BC5-B2D7-2C9B1CC2CF5A.jpeg 79A76348-34B9-4204-B045-4D3E2ED2DF23.jpeg

It looks like privet to me.
If you get hold of a Bosch hedge trimmer you'll be ok.
If it were me, I'd only trim it to get it tidy at this time of year.
Whereas in March/April you can go in really hard because the Spring growth will soon recover it.

    Interesting.
Tried very hard to see detail.
To me the leaves look to be alternate...also rather small.
This would rule out privet /Ligustrum sp.which has opposite leaves.

I would hate to prune it until we can id it.
    Any flower?

Clear close up pic to show the leaves might help.

Many thanks for the replies so far. It does flower but not at the moment so can’t photograph. However, here are the leaves... hopefully my iPad shows enough detail

Pretty sure the flowers turn into red berries in the autumn

No sign of red berries in pics.
Kevin 123......Leaves..need a clear close up please.
        Escallonia ..yes leaves alternate, .
        However, leaves have serrated edges.
My pics below show a leaf from 4 different species of Escallonia. ESCALLONIA COCCINEA 26-06-2018 19-48-01.JPG ESCALLONIA IVEYI 23-07-2019 13-12-56.JPG ESCALLONIA RUBRA MACRANTHA 10-06-2012 15-50-54.JPG ESCALLONIA RUBRA WOODSIDE 04-09-2014 12-53-37.JPG

@Kevin123 you need to get a good clear close up of the leaves - as per Silver Surfer's pics. The markings on leaves make them much easier to identify - by Silver Surfer and not me! :heehee:

                Thanks Kevin.
However....leaves are wet, shining, pooled with rain drops..... so cannot make out any detail.
Been having ANOTHER good look at your pics.
Pic 2 in top third I see a tiny red blob...a berry?

                41846B9D-CD49-4BC5-B2D7-2C9B1CC2CF5A (2).jpeg

I was wondering about holly/Ilex sp...eg Ilex crenata....but can rule that out as berries are black.
                Running out of ideas.
Maybe Ailisa is correct and it is Cotoneaster sp.

Is it just me or do the leaves in the second set of pictures look different to the first set of pictures.

I thought, Lonicera nitida at first, but leaf formation is wrong.
