Avacado tree

Over the years my wife has cultivated three avocado trees. Two are from South Africa stones. The avocados were straight off the tree so not bought in a shop. The other one is from an avocado bought in Spain.
One is in the ground and not doing too well. The other two are in pots and doing too well as they are now about 5' tall however they are very skinny. When we lived in SA we had an avocado tree in our garden so plentiful supply. Our friends had papaya plants in their garden so we did so good swaps.
However back to the problem with the avocado trees as we cannot plant them in the ground and it would be a shame for them to die off due to being in a "small" pot plus the winter.
Any advice please even if it means passing them onto someone etc? Thanks.

 

I've never actually tried one outside all winter, although I think I saw a TV programme where one had reached a fair size in a London front garden.

Finding a microclimate in your garden would be the only way to go I'm thinking.
Somewhere with heat from the house, maybe a house wall or an enclosed garden area.
If you did manage to keep it alive I'm not sure what the fruit would turn out like, I'm guessing there are selected varieties usually grown for fruit.

Other than that they are only a spindly pot plant in this country.

 

Two are what we knew as the "butternut" variety. The avocados were the size of a butternut and creamier. Maybe we should look for a new home for them as they both look to be quite healthy?

 

Maybe a national trust or botanical gardens with an orangery would be intersted

 

Hi @Surfer , if you have a moment, it would be great to see some photos. I ousted our houseplant Avocado into the garden this summer and it's apparently doing very well, but I'm not expecting it to survive the winter up here. I'd be very interested to see pictures of your trees. Thanks!

 

I love Avacados and didn't know you could grow them in the UK. I might plant a stone and see what happens x
