We've just bought another Panasonic - always had them and to be fair, apart from this one, they have lasted us well; this one was admittedly one of their cheaper ones (still £150!) but disappointingly has only lasted us just over 3 years or so; it's predecessor, which I nicknamed Chernobyl, lasted 15 years before it turned its toes up. We've gone for for another more expensive (Chernobyl Mk2) in the hope it will last another 15 years.

When our microwave is to be used someone shouts "nuke it "

Btw , was told to leave door open after use to let all moisture out so the metal doesnt rust under the paint. You guessed it despite this advice ive got rust

The new one is like Chernobyl Mk1 - stainless steel. Not an easy decision as the oven and grill parts won't get used a hell of a lot to be honest, but it seems to be the only way you can get one that is built like the proverbial outhouse.

Been to work today, as I left they were loading apples onto a lorry, I saw at least 25 one ton boxes of these.

This is correct, I have had microwaves start to rust out because of the moisture left after cooking in it, I always leave the door open now and often wipe the glass over and found that there are fewer problems with the machine altogether, the same applies to a washing machine.

Sadly with ours, it was a failure of the powder coating on the door magshield frame - that has acted in the same way that putting a metal object in the microwave would causing an arc and that in turn has burnt through the powder coating on the body of the machine. In theory, the issue could be resolved by dabbing some sort of heat resistant, non conductive, non magnetic, non metallic paint over the scorch marks and the arcing would stop - - but, the chances of getting it absolutely flat and smooth are slim at best (think car touch up pen) and that in turn would mean that the integrity of the door's sealing ability is in question and without a radiation meter to check..... deeply frustrating that this has happened on a 3 year old microwave, and I suppose I could have started a bit of a battle with Panasonic over it, but at the end of the day that would run and run for weeks/months and I have not got the time nor the energy.

In fairness, the previous Panasonic gave us all those years service, so it would seem to be just bad luck this time around.

@Fat Controller it would have to be a pretty big gap in order for a microwave to get loose. You might want to try barbecue paint. They sell it in a spray aerosol here and for obvious reasons, it is tolerant of high heat. Might be worth a try? :noidea:

@pete they do serve slices of fruit with various craft brews over here. Maybe you're on to something

You'd be surprised @CanadianLori - the tolerances on the doors are quite close and have to be checked using a leakage meter when work is carried out. New one arrives on Monday anyway, so we are all good.

I was using mine for ages until the bottom dropped off the door,;) it had a large crack in it and might have been leaking.
But it hasn't affected me at all.:dunno:
                          I'm still fairly normal:mute:;)

Until recently. I had a 800w microwave purchased from Tesco. It served me well. Then the plastic coating began to lift and peel, revealing the bare metal. A friend of Amanda, who is in the business said to just paint over the bare bits with a cheap lead based paint. I never bothered. In time Amanda's friend replaced a built in microwave for a customer, under warranty. The door had a slight mark on it. The friend wouldn't take anything for it, so I gave Amanda £50 for it. It's a LAMONA. All stainless steel inside and out.

It reall does get my back up. Having grown up with a saying. Why fix it, when it's not broken?
