Update: Have removed some of what he put down - VERY hard work! This stuff has now set like plasticine - a rake just won't cut through it. I'm finding that even a spade doesn't help - it is far easier just to pick up huge clumps of this with bare hands - no crumbling like you'd expect soil to do - it just sticks together in one piece as large as the hands can manage. I have paid the 'gardener' for his time - he got extremely angry but I wasn't prepared to pay for the 'soil'. I have found bits of glass and plastic in this too. So, the upshot is, I've learnt my lesson, go to the supplier yourself and inspect what they are selling, buy and then check again on delivery that it is what you saw. You guys have been super - apologies I havent been here for a while - I'll let you guess what has been taking up my time!!! Lou x

Sounds like that soil has come from a place that recycles hardcore and soil mixed together and screens it to get soil and hardcore out then sell it

I agree with others. Even without the stones, what you have there isn’t what I would call topsoil, just a load of rubbish.

Hahah well at least you tell the truth
To befair when I was learning hydroponic I kill loads of plants and trees lol never mine we. Liv an learn . If you need any advice on indoor I’m happy to help but if it’s out door I don’t have a clue lol.
I’m leaning how to genetically modified seeds it sound really complicated but if I can do it trust me a monkey could . I like bonsai trees so I wonna learn it for that purpose to change leaf colour but it may just end up dead hahah

Basically Top Soil is just that. It's a layer of soil off the surface of the ground. So you could end up with a load of top soil from a meadow, or a load from some gritty grotty layby.

The idea is to check it, before the lorry tips it. Not happy then send it back. Attempts to convert basic muck to your idea of good top soil can and probably will cost you over and above the cost of correct stuff to start with.

sorry to hear all that. I did think it would became set in place hence my first post.
The chap has to take it on the chin for a poor standard of work, ok he might not have known the soil was like that till delivery but should have rejected it.
At least you spotted it and can now work at getting a nice base laid for the turf.
