Sure, I'm just thinking that if statistics can be wrong in one country they can be in another. We probably won't know the full extent of this whole thing until many years after the event.

So if Boris rejected his scientists advice because of opposition from within his own party, will he now go for a short national lockdown if Labour will support it?

 

Hes only just announced a new set of rules, are you suggesting he scraps them after a few days and goes for a full lockdown because Starmer wants one?

I think it would be political suicide.

Starmer only wants a full lockdown because its not something anyone wants, apart from him and scientists, none of whom will be the ones picking up the pieces afterwards.

 

Looks like Drakeford is going to put some Welsh legislation in place to stop those from high infection areas coming into Wales. Boris isn't interested.

Well Mark, how about ANPR on major routes whacking out postal fines to any drivers with cars registered in a high infection area?

A few quid for the Welsh coffers as well.

 

On that thinking maybe we should do the same in my area, I can see this all getting very awkward in the coming months.

 

At the very begining of this, when it was a three week lock down, I posted on here it was to be at least six months, and was laughed at
I based my estimate on the fact that the Gov said three weeks but had suspended MOT's Mortgage payments, and interset until October, Why ? if it was only three weeks

Now we have new advice for three weeks, but have been advised it will be until March. Another six months.
We wil have this until after the DFS sales end

 

I'm going to go out on a limb here and throw my own prediction into the ring. My predictions on national/global events are usually as wrong as my football predictions, so I am not expecting to be right (which kind of doesn't make sense, but you know what I mean) and nor am I advocating this or any other eventuality - I literally have no opinion on it all any more, its far too complicated with so many pro's and con's to each option. But -
I don't believe there will be any other kind of lockdown now, for any period of time. Instead, restrictions will gradually decrease as we head towards Christmas, and before long evaporate all together. My reasoning:-

- The PM, an instinctive small-l liberal, is absolutely desperate to avoid it; so, apparently, is the Chancellor. We hear constantly that the economic cost of lockdown will be high, and that it may bring other health problems leading to death including by suicide, especially if there is consequent high unemployment.

- Many opinion polls show continued opposition to lockdowns.

- Extremely few employers seem to want it.

- Local government/councils are resistant. Yes, some are publicly requesting heavier restrictions, but behind the scenes one hears different conversations (the same is true of the unions in my experience - I'm not in a union myself but have seen and heard what they have been saying in meetings and it does not reflect their public stances.) Most local authorities are keen to display a "back to normal" impression, and not a day goes by without I get an email from a library service or museum celebrating another site re-opening.

- Its becoming a political show of strength. Boris is under pressure from other parties, and a few in his own, and if he caves in he knows it could cause him to look weak.

- A lockdown/further restrictions in themselves do not offer a long-term solution, and don't seem to be aimed at any concrete end-game.

As I say, none of the above reflects my own opinion on whether or not we should go down the lockdown route, because that opinion is now non-existent.

I totally agree. Right from the off I have said that there was too much emphasis on saving lives and not enough on saving life.

My two pennurth on the Beeb.
I fail to see any great bias in its reporting. It regularly gives the political class a hard time in interviews and it's presenters on the flagship programs and it's senior correspondents are the best in the business. I think that the overall perception of the Beeb being a lefty organisation comes more from its embracing inclusivity in its general content. If Eastenders has a storyline about radicalisation and it helps to dispel the common mantra that "all p@kis are terrorists" then so much the better. If it was to introduce a ( serious ) storyline about someone who wants to identify as a crisp wrapper them it deserves all it gets.

 

There seems to be an ever increasing number of "scientists", who know all about this kind of thing, appearing on TV.
Where are they all coming from?
And if there are that many, why are we in this state?

We seem to have scientists and professors coming out of out ears.
One stated a vaccine is as far away as next July at the earliest, my bet is further than that, but then I'm not a scientist.

My thoughts are the vaccine will be ready right around the time this is all over.

 

If that was the case, and the Covid-19 infection totals include large numbers of common cold cases, then Covid-19 would have much higher hospitalisation/death rates than those currently being calculated.

Unless there's now a killer common cold on the loose.
