I dont understand that @Scrungee
Surely we are talking about positive tests, not hospitalisation.
Lots of people testing positive and not going into hospital, in fact most people dont.

It's becoming like the Hall of mirrors in an Alice in Wonderland scene....nothing seems logical, believable or encouraging anymore.

I used to enjoy waking up and thinking of nice things to look forward to as the day unfolded
that feeling not with me ATM,
    Jenny

Following figures completely made up, and are just to demonstrate my point in above post:

If 20% of people testing positive are hospitalised and 50% of those hospitalised die, the hospitalisation rate is 20%, and the death rate is 10%.

But if say 25% of all those testing positive only have the common cold, then the hospitalisation rate for Covid-19 would be 20 out of 75 (100 -25), up to 27% (from 20%), and the death rate for Covid-19 would be 10 out of 75, up to 13% (from 10%).

Or, to put it simply, every 10% of the total tests that are false positives incorrectly reduces the hospitalisation and death rates by 13.3%, so if suggestions about inflated positive tests are correct, it would mean that the effects of Covid-19 are actually worse than has been reported.

To put it simply I dont understand your percentages.

If 1000 people test positive and 10% are the common cold then then the actual figures for covid 19 infections is only 900.
Which means the actual statistics of new infections are wrong.

Agreed it would mean a greater percentage of covid 19 patients are needing hospitalisation.

That's what I'm talking about, that if the amount of cases is overstated, then the severity of Covid-19 is being understated.

So anybody who bangs on about the number of cases being wrong, should remember that means Covid-19 is a correspondingly worse disease than the current statistics indicate.

Its because this country is still one of the world-leaders when it comes to science, despite what those determined to drag us down all the time like to say. Scientists from this country, and others from elsewhere who choose to live and work here. Your inverted commas suggest you think some of those appearing tv may be bogus?

Ah, now you are correct in a way, but also wrong in a way. We are only world leaders in science where the hypothesis matches that of the current way of thinking; if you have a different view, then you are just plain disregarded as a tinfoil hat wearing eejit. Now, whilst I accept fully that there will definitely be views that are just plain wrong, or can be proven wrong, to have their views simply disregarded out of hand is NOT how science works.

I would be interested to hear:

Those who support lockdown/circuit breaker - what do you think it will achieve, and to what extent do civil liberties affect your support? And what if anything might make you accept that it is not a helpful solution, or may even make things worse?

Those who oppose lockdown/circuit breaker - what method would you prefer to see instead, and at what point/how high a death toll would you accept that a lockdown may be needed? Are you principally motivated by scientific evidence, or instinct?

Both - do you accept that those holding the alternative view are guided by sincerity and good faith, or do you assume their position on this issue stems from delusion or selfishness/vindictiveness?

Covid deniers or conspiracy theorists (of whom there seem to be mercifully few on this site) I would be grateful if you don't answer, as it would only skew the picture. Thanks.
