When you talk of 'the NHS', shouldn't there be some differentiation between the staff who actually do the nitty-gritty work, and the countless managers and admin who've been draining it's resources for as long as I can remember? The former certainly do deserve respect and admiration...

You clearly use Twitter, therefore cannot have missed the sheer number of those TikTok videos that were circulating - yes, there is nothing wrong with a bit of gallows humour, particularly in that job (I used to work in a nursing home by the way, so have a bit of understanding and sympathy), but the sheer volume of them and the fact that quite some time had been spent on making them is my issue. As my staff know, I have no issue with a bit of down time, a bit of a laugh - - - but do not come to me and tell me you are overwhelmed when you have just spent half a day laughing and joking; the same principle applies to the NHS. The odd giggle, fair enough, but video after video of dancing and using hospital beds as boats..... too much.

I am only still here because of the NHS and also have nothing but admiration for what they do - but, that does not preclude me from criticising them when they are getting things wrong. My overall view of them is still that of respect, but one where I am aware that there are failings just as there are in all walks of life. My point was not that they were not deserving of public transport, my point was most 'to walk a mile in another mans shoes' in relation to the "I would make them do a shift in a COVID ward" line. No point making them do a shift in a COVID ward as they would not be able to cope with it - no doubt about that. However, there would be no point making a nurse do a shift chucking a double decker around London either, as they wouldn't be able to do that.

I sincerely hope your mother gets well soon.

@ARMANDII - it is a vocation, yes absolutely, however the very nature of what they do means that they will sometimes encounter situations where they are in the line of danger as it is the nature of their job. Chosing to be a firefighter, soldier or police officer is no different - they know when they put that uniform on that there may be occasions when they come up against real danger that threatens their very existence. I have the utmost respect for them, I really do - - but that does not absolve them of criticism when they are getting things wrong. Some really stupid things have been done through all of this by NHS staff, and like it or not that has had a detrimental effect of how people are viewing things - - sadly, poo sticks.

Given that Simon's comment was in relation to one of my posts, I can only assume that it is your belief that I am trying to convince people that the world is flat? In doing so, you have just proven exactly what I said further up - question anything, give valid criticism, and you are dismissed as a tinfoil hat wearing loon.

Thanks for that, at least I am now clear on how I am viewed.

No, FC, it wasn't anything you said that I was referring to but, if you look, it was a comment by Simon....

I have some time for this point.[/QUOTE]

              to which I replied.......

So, my comment was to Simon asking if he would listen for up to a hundred years to someone trying to convince him that the World was flat.

I reckon we all know that any organisation has flaws.
It can't be a perfect world in any institution because we're only human.
Local management should be in place to keep reasonable order.. That's what they are paid for.
And in serious debates, a bit of humour can help the medicine go down, or at least put a persons point across without wishing to be over bearing.

We had an Indian chap on our security gate a year or two back.
He told me in a serious tone that Western science and geography was all fiction. He said that he believed that the earth is flat.
I asked him how he could possibly think that?
His reply was that whenever he travelled from Bristol to Bradford to visit the family he never went downhill once.
He didn't smile.. He was serious.

I had never even heard of the video before you mentioned it and have never been on TikTok - I can't even work out how it works or exactly what it is. Don't you have to access it via a smartphone? I only use a laptop.

As of midnight past we are back under the Situation of Calamity with new rules ...

                    - no more than five people together in the street, commercial spaces and restaurants.
                    - Academic celebrations and other non-academic events in educational establishments are prohibited.
                    - Maximum of fifty guests at weddings and baptisms, who must wear a mask and comply with the rules of hygiene.
                    - Raise fines for establishments that do not comply with rules up to ten thousand euros and Reinforcement of inspection measures for both establishments and individuals
                    - "Strongly" recommend wearing masks on the street and installing the Stayaway Covid.
Presented to Parliament Wednesday an "urgent" proposal for the use of a mask to become mandatory on the street, "with common sense" - that is, when there is a concentration of people - as well as the installation of application "in work, school and academic contexts, in the armed and security forces and in public administration".

So, not a lot of change for us, meeting up with friends down from 20 to 5 but that is okay as we don't know 20 people but it buggars up meeting with two couples. When we went through our nearest small village (7kms away) on the way to the Garden Center on Monday, I only saw one person not wearing a mask on the street ... and it was monthly market day.

Algarve is still doing okay and only 30 active cases in our county confined to home being checked on by the authorities. Big problems are Lisbon area and up North (Oporto) with family gatherings, University/educational infections and sadly also nursing homes still.

Most of our deaths are over 80 years of age ...

Could this be the way forward - while we wait for the vaccine?

Oxford scientists develop five-minute Covid-19 antigen test which could be used in mass testing at airports, businesses.

Finally someone in our media is publishing common sense

"context matters. Without providing corresponding information about the growth in testing, the number of cases is more or less irrelevant.

The media blare out the fact that new cases are up 25% from the height of the pandemic, but ignore the fact that testing is up 800%. This is a lie by omission. It’s alarmism. And it should be ignored.

Instead of the hysteria focusing on new case numbers, we should aim our focus on what really matters: number of new cases in vulnerable populations (especially those over the age of 70), number of hospitalizations, number of people in intensive care units (ICUs) and number of deaths.

Premier Ford announced that all gyms and fitness centres, bars and indoor restaurants, casinos and cinemas must close in major Ontario cities. He also banned social gatherings and events, including weddings.

These measures take aim at working-aged Canadians and ignore the truth about COVID-19 fatalities — namely that the average age of COVID-19 deaths in Canada is 84.8 years old. Compare that to the life expectancy in Canada: 82 years. "

So, I believe if we take personal responsibility to safeguard the vulnerable, the rest of us could get on with our lives!
