In theory, yes. But unfortunately in reality there are a lot false positive tests and somehow thousands of tests are being counted twice.

The obsession with Mr Trump is getting boring.;)

I agree the more tests you do the truer the picture, but only if you are testing the whole country in the same way.
Test one area more than another and you get a false reading regarding more cases in any said area.
So the amount of stated new c ases will only rise bearing in mind you are testing more people.

I still think half? of those who actually have the virus are not bothering to get tested.

With respect to one and all. The more I see and hear about this virus. Honestly, the more confused I become.
So we here in the UK are probably no different than a person the other side of the world. We have become victims of a death dealing virus. In most democratic countries, we look to our governments to take the lead in getting us through it. We admire and respect our medics, many, sadly who have given their lives to the virus. Governments try this and that, lockdowns and the like. Just my thoughts here, being as the UK is an island. Truthfully. What is the purpose of locking down London, when London is such a small area of the island. Is the virus going to ignore London and go elswhere?

Fair do's. Many in authority are doing their best, but many mistakes are made. However I tend to sit up, when hearing peoples points in the news. Another lockdown. I won't be able to go to golf, etc etc. Hells Bells. Asvice is being offered for your safety and wellbeing. It's like. Hey mate. Your house is on fire, get out now. Yes OK, I'll just finish watching Corrie St. What's up with people.

YES I know a lot about loneliness. Thankfully Amanda visits most days or at least phones. I've been stuck indoors since February. My in tray/box is empty due to many contacts not at work. Apart from being a vulnerable person, my cancer op is delayed again. For goodness sake. Hold onto what you have. Be positive.

Kind of - it would prevent people bringing it into the city, and prevent infected Londoners spreading it beyond. If followed properly it would also mean that those within London, or any area, are not in circulation, picking up or passing anything on, which in theory should reduce infection rates and alleviate the struggle of the NHS. There are currently 11,000 patients in NHS hospitals with covid. The more who need admitting every day, the fewer beds and time there are for other patients and vice-versa.

                    You and me both Mike.

I'm not sure I fully follow all your post, because you question the point of locking down London, but go on to say people should just follow the advice which suggests you may favour what the government are doing.

The confusion over my personal situation has just deepened. My employers have now delayed making a decision until Friday at the earliest, no-one is to come in to work tomorrow and we have just to advise the public we are closing for one day and possibly more. We have been sent details of the actual terms of the bill Boris Johnson is putting through today, and, as I tried explaining on these pages before, it is infinitely more complex than it may have seemed to some. The definition of "essential services" runs to many paragraphs, all with sub-sections, clauses and exemptions. Because our service straddles libraries, housing and public internet access under one roof all manner of attempts are being made to prove we qualify as essential, but again each interpretation is dependent on so many factors. I think its quite deplorable that the authorities - national or local - could let it drag on this long, and that the rules are not more clearly spelt out. At this rate we will know who the next US President is going to be long before I know whether or not I'm meant to be in work.

Just received in the post (a 14km round trip) an envelope from our County/Municipality Office with three packs of 2x cotton masks with a note saying "together we will win this challenge" and has their logo printed discretely on them ...

Silves was once the Moorish Capital of Algarve (hence the Moon) and is dominated by the Castle. We live about a 20 minute drive from here.

                              It is so confusing now
I can not meet my daughter in the large garden
Though I can travel to a park, then meet and talk to her there ?

My two daughters are school teachers, they go to work, talk and mix with each other
                              and about forty other teachers,
Yet they are not allowed to visit each other in their front gardens, they have to go to a public space
