Bar Tailed Godwits, not a common wader down here compared to the 100's of Black Tailed Godwits in Poole harbour but these three over winter at the Fleet near Weymouth every year coming from their Arctic breeding grounds.

        Interesting situation today :).

I did some roast lamb, trimmed most of the meat off the bone and then threw it onto the lawn. The normal order of things is that Sarafi the cat helps himself and then the magpies and crows come next. We were sitting in the lounge and about ten minutes after the cat had his fill the magpies suddenly flew away and a red kite swooped down and took the bone on the fly and almost hit our window as he took off again. I would guess his wingspan was close to 6ft and looked enormous as he went almost vertically up past our glass patio doors. :rolleyespink:

@strongylodon I think that the Kite must have seen it, or been attracted to the scene by the gaggle of magpies, as it was in the centre of the lawn.

@shiney, it has often been thought that Kites, like Vultures, have an extra sense of smell, it is likely but not proven. You could try it again!

Sorry @shiney, I redid the post. Raptors are mainly known for their incredible eyesight so it may well have been alerted to it by other birds.

Beautiful birds with a haunting cry. I remember fishing in Rutland years ago when one swooped down and sat on a fence post about 25 feet way from my friend and I, and kept chortling to itself while completely ignoring us.:love30:

Do they still make toffee apples?

This is a male Pileated Woodpecker. They are rare here and simply huge. I sure hope he stays around as they are fascinating to watch and I love the loud call. It sounds like a jackhammer when it is working on a tree.
