1 in 60 people in Wales have Covid-19 according to the ONS. The local mass vaccination centre is operating, but we need more vaccine.

Perhaps this suggestion of a single jab may be the way forward.

@clanless - the single jab idea reduces the efficacy significantly from what I can gather, so for those who are vulnerable they would need to then go right to the back of the queue for the second jab before they were able to be 'free'

Personally, I hold out more hope for the Oxford vaccine, not least as we are producing it here and its storage/distribution seems to be easier to manage - - that alone should allow us to batter through a larger number of people.

I agree - Oxford / AstraZeneca will be our most powerful weapon against covid-19. As Matt said yesterday - the final bits of data have only just been handed over to the MHRA - so let's keep our fingers crossed.

I would reckon that Moderna will be the next to be approved - as other countries seem to be happy with it.

It's the age old story - it's all down to money - the wealthier countries taking up the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine stocks - whilst the poorer countries (in terms of money) have to wait for the AstraZeneca vaccine.

You know, I doff my hat to Oxford / AstraZeneca :dbgrtmb:- AstraZeneca are supplying it at cost to poorer countries - but can add up to 20% for others. The poorer countries are sadly in a position where they can only afford the Oxford vaccine. They started to make the vaccine in June and will have 400 million doses ready for Europe by the end of December. It's also being made in other countries - so 400 million is the tip of the ice berg.

@clanless , I would hope that the wealthier countries ‘chip in’ and help those less fortunate than ourselves, given all the noble rhetoric. We’ll see.

I wish that the vaccination could be given much more quickly to everyone, young and old. Speed is of the essence.

I noticed that the French have announced that they have one case of the new variant of covid, :roflol:

In a man who has travelled from London.
Good thing they only have the one case.;)

Maybe they should have kept the blockade going a bit longer.

Personally I think its just a way of justifying the blockade and all the problems it has caused.

I noticed that too this morning, but they have now corrected it to 20,262. Also noticed the US is under recorded by about 100,000. I would suspect ours (Portugal) is a bit under reported today due to Christmas ... wait for the numbers to be caught up!

I think there's a misunderstanding there. The recorded cases were for all new Coronavirus cases and not just the new variant.

PARIS (Reuters) - France registered 20,262 new, confirmed COVID-19 cases and 159 more related deaths in hospitals in the last 24 hours, health ministry data showed, as fears of a new wave of the virus mount in the euro zone’s second-biggest economy.

France’s number of confirmed COVID-19 cases now stands at 2,547,771 while its COVID-19 death toll stands at 62,427 - the seventh-highest in the world.

Well they would say that to justify their actions, the UK would probably have done the same.
