Strawberries from seeds

    Has anyone grown strawberries from seeds?
    I read about it taking a month of Sundays, but nonetheless I planted few seeds 3 weeks ago and just now tiny teeny weeny green spots appeared. I'm hoping to get them into proper mini plants, but its taking soooooooo long. :scratch:

    Whats the procedure from now? Do they need some extra care, or nutritients or just water and wait and see?

    Generally you wait until the seedling has it's first true leaves (2nd pair of leaves) then prick out and pot on. I've never grown strawberries from seed so I've had a quick look and you will possibly not have a productive first growing season.

    Sorry, silly question, what does 'thorning out' mean?
    I have the variety that produces constantly, and I'll put it hydroponic as soon as roots are strong enough.
    But in the beginning stages it's same as what's done in regular growing.

    Did this last year but very late in the season; got some strawbs from a local pick your own and they were so utterly fab I had to give it a whiz. I'm overwintering some very small seedlings now, not expecting any fruit until next year though

      Interesting, so they can be grown in domestic setting from seeds.

      How long did it take you before they were recognisable as a (small) strawberry plant?

      Sure, just a bit fiddly! Don't recall exact time but few weeks maybe on germinatioon plus a bit longer before the spiky edged leaves started showing as strawberry plants

      Grown everbearing Temptation from seeds and Alpine strawberries - both had berries in the same season. Did sow along with all other seeds. Usual watering, transplanting in individual pots - then planting outside.

      Alpines are a doddle, just looking at them seems to spread around the garden!

      This is one of the seedlings I sowed around August

        I'm really looking forward to getting the first strawbs from them, the original was a deep, deep red and utterly delicious so I hope this will be the same / similar

          Hi, I sewed my seeds back in late march early April, i transferred them into pots mid May & into the greenhouse, i know have 12 good size plants with runners sprouting everywhere & one has a flower with what I think is my first strawberry in the centre, I am now clipping the runners & replanting in the hope this will give me another dozen or so plants for next year. in answer to your question & I`m a novice, I had my seeds indoors on the window cill for around 6 weeks or so, then put in pots when they were 2 inches tall
