We had a huge explosion sound, like that of a jet breaking the sound barrier, 2 times a few minutes apart, but no idea what is was at all.... it sounded like it hit the lower roof .. a loud thud.....thud....:thud:

The sound of an aircraft breaking the sound barrier, depending on which direction and height the aircraft was travelling. Usually the sound is a boom rather than a thud because it's caused by air pressure.

I would doubt very much that a Sonic Boom would shake a tree down unless the tree was already in the process of doing so:dunno:, but it would effect power lines.
I saw one of our Squadron Lightnings doing a low level run along the runway at a height of less than 100' (piloted by one of our Pilots (Bugs Bendall) when it "inadvertently" went through the Sound Barrier. Because it was so low and near it took out the Airfield Air Traffic Control Tower windows and comms while also slightly moving the roof of the Wing Commander's Flying cabin, and breaking light bulbs because the building was within 50' of the Lightning passing when it went through the Sound Barrier.
My point is that to do any real damage a supersonic aircraft has to be in close proximity of property rather than at height. Bugs Bendell, who always flew to the limits, got off charges for doing damage due to as he put it "being given the wrong air pressure forecast" although the Wing Commander Flying was not really happy:dunno::heehee:

I remember in the old days lots of them used to break the sound barrier, "inadvertently".

Used to live just down the road from Coningsby (where the Typhoons came from today) in the 60's into the 80's had Phantoms and were just getting Tornados when I left.
Exercises could be noisy and not sure how well the altimeters worked at times, as the pilots took advantage of the flat surroundings and lack of trees.

Well, it always was "inadvertently", pete, when it happened:dunno::heehee: Flight Lieutenant Bugs Bendell was one of the few Pilots to fly the prototypes of the Lightning all the way through to the
latest version. He was also No.111 Squadron's Aerobatic Pilot all the time he was with us and knew how to throw a Lightning to it's limits around the skies, while the Squadron itself was the RAF Aerobatic Team known as the "Black Arrows" so there was a lot of extreme flying going on all the time.:dunno:

I think the Pilot's would be asking what an Altimeter was and did:dunno::heehee::loll:

It certainly shook the walls of our house and you know how solid that is (good traditional construction) and a couple of small plastic containers flew off the top of a wheelie bin. :rolleyespink:

It's not the first time this has happened :noidea:. It was similar about this time two years ago. A small price for safety :blue thumb:. They always scramble them from Coningsby for this area. It's about 100 miles by road, don't know how far as the Typhoon flies, and don't know how long it takes to get to the sound barrier.

Well, there's always a certain number of Supersonic Fighters on QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) at different airfields 24/7 to deal with any security alerts. The time it takes for a Pilot to commit to breaking the Sound Barrier depends on the time it takes to get clearance to do so.

Smart motorways. 11 people a year on average die on smart motorways in England - what's smart about that?

A good way to ease congestion - but what about reducing the number of cars on the road? Ban cars over a certain age - double road tax - double the price of petrol. There's a win-win here Boris - same income from fewer cars - less wear and tear on the roads and people don't get run over.

Don't have a smart road near here, but our road is dangerous and it's nowt to do with the road it's the way people drive, they don't and won't slow down, i've had my arm hit 3 times by the mirrors and Miss Jiff and Me have had to jupp into the ditch or get hit, i now wear a camera, the road is single track and no grass verge to stand on, so you'm only 4-5 inches from being hit anyway

Never been on a smart motorway but looking at them i would even drive on the near lane (ex hard shoulder) as you relay on cameras and people watching monitors

Yeah, smart motorways are a money saving death trap.

Not a lot for the Motorist as originally they got rid of the Hard Shoulder and "forgot" to put in emergency breakdown areas instead, so quite a few accidents were caused until they remedied that by putting in those emergency areas every half mile or so:doh:.
The Smart bit is all about data and supposedly managing Traffic, what it does do is increase surveillance tracking of vehicle movements for the Police and also for planning further infrastructure development.

You sound like the old style Labour and Conservative Leaders:heehee:, "if it's popular, necessary, and used by all, then tax it!!!!":dunno::heehee::loll: The next step would be to tax, and double tax, all those people walking as they're wearing out the pavements:dunno::loll:
