It looks like the brainiacs at Oxford are still leading the fight..

Mr Soriot also said AstraZeneca was working on a vaccine with Oxford University that would target the South African variant of the coronavirus.

The media is awash with speculation as to why the death toll has been so high in the UK. The answer is simple - people didn't and still don't comply with the rules and stay at home. No point in trying to blame the Government.

My doctors surgery is pretty much closed between 24th February to 19 March, emergency stuff only and no repeat prescriptions.

They call it a system up grade to EMIS what ever that is.
Maybe the place might work a bit better afterwards, I don't know, but I think it's more likely to be more chaotic than it is now.

          Wishing you both well @JWK

Your surgery sounds as good as ours is :dbgrtmb:They have done a brilliant job of working throughout this pandemic using all available technology. No complaints at all...even though my x-ray request was forgotten. Mistakes happen and if there had been a real emergency requiring it I would've checked it out sooner than I eventually did.

News sometimes perplexes me. Today Yahoo News is saying "Portugal is currently struggling with what is believed to be the worst current death rate in the world" yet it is No 23 on Worldometer Deaths per Million. Portugal has the third oldest by percentage population in the world behind Japan and Italy (vying with Finland) with 20-odd percent over 65. The majority of our deaths are sadly older folk mostly in their 80s and 90s.

Jenny, congrats on getting your jab date:blue thumb: Do you think it is the policy if two older people are in the household both will be given appointments at the same time? My daughter in laws parents who live in Cumbria, both had the jab on the same appointment. Just wondered if it was policy.

@HarryS my Aunt and Uncle ( both 89) had theirs done at the same time by our surgery just after Christmas. I think it would be the most sensible way to go really . I know hubs and I won't as we are in different age grouping. That's fine though.

I would imagine the surgery can offer them at the same time if they have free slots. Mine's at 3.39pm and my OH at 3.42pm.....

I wish it was, Harry, but two friends of mine, who've been married for 54 years, have been given separate appointments due to the 6 year age difference.:wallbanging:

The EU seems to be getting into a right "fit" over the fact that Pfizer has practically stopped it's vaccine production while it's modifies it's European factories to be able to increase production, while Astro Zeneca is doing the same in Brussels.
It hasn't helped itself by being at least 3 months behind the UK in ordering and approving the vaccines and it hasn't even approved the Astro Zeneca vaccine yet.:wallbanging: One of the things the EU wants now, for the Astro Zeneca vaccine, is for the UK based factories to divert the UK supply to the EU when the factories are already working to the maximum for the UK supply.
It's now trying to hide it's own inefficiencies by blaming the Companies when it should have been sorting things out over 3 months.

They'll try to spin any information whatever way they want to make a story. Makes me so annoyed. I worked in the NHS analysing data and statistics etc from raw patient level data sources...they can be interpreted and recorded in so many different ways. I ALWAYS question stats.

I also don't believe the UK is the worst hit country in the world like I read somewhere the other day. Are we all consistently recording data? I doubt it very much.

The Biden Administration has now found out that there are no reserves left for the Pfizer Vaccines due to the incompetence of the Trump team. They've already taken the decision to give an single dose to as many people as possible but, when it comes to the second dose, it seems that some States had bad record keeping and not all jabs were recorded properly. They say they will rely on the every day manufacture by Pfizer and when the Moderna vaccines come on line they will use that as the second jab if the Pfizer is not available. They'll also be using other things like the anti-body drugs to replace the second jab if needed. They've got a big mess to clean up and it's not going to be easy and will take a lot of time.
