Walking past the bowling green yesterday, and was amazed to see them giving it the first mow of the year. Bearing in mind it was frozen solid 4 days ago, but it is very mild and dryish here now. When do others approx give the lawn it's 1st mow? It's normally mid March for me.

My first mowing is simply governed by the weather. Some years I'm mowing all through the winter but this year I haven't started. Having said that, if we get the full week of sun next week I shall mow then as long as the soil is OK.

      I last mowed early December.

I dont actually mow the lawn, I just cut the grass, cant class mine as a lawn, but do the same as Shiney, at the first chance that its dry enough.
It had been growing all winter up until last week.

My grass will get cut end of April/May ish; still end up avoiding the leaves off the spring bulbs. If it is dry I could be early April.

I haven't got a lawn. This can cut both ways. Scuse the pun. A well kept lawn does enhance a garden. Then on the other hand. To keep it in tip top condition, can cost a bomb and a lot of time and energy. I have none of these.

Turning back to Harry's quote. From my professional experience of bowling greens. I would say. Too early. The grasses used on bowling green are very specially selected. Once into the season. Yes they can be cut every day. In this case, as Harry says, a couple of days ago. The ground was frozen. Just a point. Bowling greens have so much money spent on drainage. However even though the snow, frost etc may have melted above ground, just below the suface it could still be frozen.

As I always say. Many books etc are written, much advice given. What works for me, might not work for you. Times and attitudes have changed. In general on the parks. It was usually. Get a cut in just before easter.

Hey ho! Lets hope things turn out OK for the green keeper. Angry bowles players are not nice people.

Most of my lawns are at least 50% moss and 30% weeds (except where the proportions are the other way round :rolleyespink:). My wild area won't be cut until July/August when the last of the bee orchids have set seed.

Thanks for all the inputs. I'll wait as usual until I can see some real growth around mid-March before I give the lawns their first crop of the season.
