Just went into the loft; just as my waist got through the loft hatch I had a sinking moment as the as the ladder slipped away! Down it went with a frantic moment of scrambling to grab something before a plummet...

Luckily the ladder snagged on the corner of something just as the very tip of the ladder was at the bottom of the loft hatch reveal. About 1cm more and I'd be tending a couple of bruises I should think.

Always check the angle of the dangle!

Been there done that. Ladder fell over while I was on the garage roof. Had to wait until a neighbour came home from work to be able to get down.
BUT if you want a really awkward moment. My father was up the stepladders one day when his trousers decided to descend. He was totally stuck. He could not bend to reach the waistband to pull them up and try as he might he could not get them to come off altogether. He never did tell us how he was extricated.

Ladder accidents are all too common.
One of the best things i installed was a 'bolted on' purpose built extending loft ladder.
Makes it a whole lot easier and safer.

Using step ladders for accessing the loft is very risky, a family member did just that a month ago putting away Christmas decorations, he really hurt himself. A few years ago I had to rescue our next door neighbour who broke her back falling from the loft, I could faintly hear her shouting for help, we had to force the door open to get in.

A proper fixed loft ladder is essential.

Not a loft ladder problem. I had connected 3 lights in the loft, 2 bulbs had blown and like us all would think I'll change to 2 bulbs some day, but didn't.............

I was working in the very large loft one day and the last bulb went, I was now in complete darkness and had to creep very carefully to the loft hatch......

Being in a bungalow we have a very large loft and it is divided into two sections with a wall between (since an extension was done). After some near disasters we now have fixed loft ladders for both. Now that we're :old: we certainly notice the benefit as we use the lofts for storage and they are in frequent use. Two different types of ladder but both good. :blue thumb:

I did mention a fixed ladder to the wife who promptly said we have better things to spend money on!

For years I used to get into the loft with a step ladder, in those days I used to just pull myself up through the hole with my arms, now I'm weaker and heavier so had to get a loft ladder.

So much better and always there when you want it, no running around to get the steps etc. before going into the loft.

This wasn't on a step ladder by the way. The plumber that fitted the boiler in the loft used one to get in and out and it was both hilarious and frightening - he was about 18 stone on tippy toes of the topmost part of a step ladder and just about balancing to get in or down.

When our Grandmother was in her advanced 80s, we cleared out and emptied her top cupboards, reorganised everything and confiscated her stepladder.

That somewhat backfired when she started to re-use the now empty top cupboards ("what a waste of very useful storage space to keep them empty!") by using a tall stool and a box on it to reach them. :wallbanging:

We should have known, a Lady who for her 80th birthday present wants a new bicycle ("no helmet please, I'd rather die of wrecked brain than hip") and a stereo system for her 90th (I never dared to ask about that) is unlikely to obey sensible health&safety concerns.

Personally I'm planning to delegate any life threatening tasks to my offspring. That, after all, is why you make kids in the first place. :old:
