Hi, we have a beautiful, well established rose plant at the front of our house.
    20200602_173855.jpg
Unfortunately the wall behind it is in a bad state and looks like it will have to be taken down and be rebuilt.
Would it be possible for me to carefully dig out the rose and then replant it once the wall has been built back up?
Thanks for any help you can give me with this.

      Hi Chris.

I take it the photo is not a recent one.
This is a tricky one. If it was my rose and I was in a similar predicament, then I'd take a chance. Generally planting of what are called, bare root roses can be carried out until late March. However roses are already showing new growth. Once new growth begins, then it is understandable that there will be some set-back.

Digging the rose out. It is more than possible that despite how careful you are, the main rap root will get damaged. OK root pruning can be done. However in this case, you would need to lift the bush with a good root ball. This would call for either replant within the least possible time. So, as i've said. If it was me and my rose, then I'd go ahead. With the greatest respect to you. Have you thought about pulling the bush away from the wall via a rope, then once the wall is rebuilt and dried out, release the rope.

Sorry Chris if this is not very helpful, but as said, it's a tricky one.

Hi Mike, the photo was taken last summer so no not very recent. With regards to pulling the rose back I'll know more tomorrow as the a bricklayer is coming to tell me what needs to be done. The worry is that the footings of the wall have perished as there are some significant cracks in the wall itself. As far as time frames go I'm more than willing to take the rose out the day before the work starts and I'm imagining it will only take a few days to complete the rebuild. Like I said I'll know more tomorrow so hopefully things aren't as bad as they seem.
We've not been here too long but there is the rose 20200601_135511.jpg
above and one in the back garden and we love seeing them bloom in the summer.

I don't know but. Being not only gardener in all aspects. I am also a keen naturalist. NO. I keep my clothes on. That is the other lot, the Naturist. I have always considered the Barn Owl as a very special member of our wildlife.

Well, it's no lie, Mike, if I say that Woo is a very special member of the Admin Team and member of GC. His knowledge of Roses is beyond bounds and his courtesy and politeness is a benchmark for me.

I second your appraisal of Woo. However when for whoever, whatever, an individuals knowledge is beyond bounds. As in the saying. There is always someone worse off than me. Likewise, where education and knowledge enters the ring, I M O the same applies.

Good morning @Chris.T my friend it looks really old and established ask the bricklayer to work round it just put a rope round it and when he gets to the Rose pull the Rose gently away from the wall ,your other option is to put temporary trellis behind it between the Rose and the wall and then remove the trellis when the new wall is completed ,if it were my Rose I would only move it if I had no other choice but before I moved it I would cut it right back to 12 inches and get every root out they usually go to a depth of 15 inches and make sure you can dig out the largest root ball you can manage hope this helps:smile:

Hi, thanks very much for your replies so far, they are very much appreciated.
As it turns out the bricklayer hasn't turned up today so I'm still none the wiser as to what I'll need to do.
If I do need to remove the rose I have this large bucket to put it in

                    20210227_180828.jpg
Could I ask what I would need to put in it to give the rose the best chance of survival?
Thanks again for all your help

                      @Chris.T

A mixture of 5 parts general purpose compost, 3 parts sand, 2 parts potting grit, and a handful of Blood, Fish and Bone. If it's going to stay in the pot for a while then, when it breaks into growth, give it a fortnightly feed of High Potash feed such as Tomato feed and.......don't let it dry out.:nonofinger::heehee:

                        Thanks for the info.
I'm hoping that as a worst case scenario if it does have to come out that it would only be for a few days as the wall isn't that big.

Just want to say thanks again to everyone who has given me advice with this.
The bricklayer has been round today and said that I can get away with only having the top half of the wall rebuilt and if I can rope the roses and pull them away then he can work around that with the minimum of fuss.:yay::yahoo:
