I was taught that like the ones at funerals and similar to the exchanging of rings it is meant to symbolise the neverending cycle of life hence the use of evergreens in them, and they were used here before Christianity came-like the timing of the celebration of Easter it has been amalgamated into Christian tradition.

Bits of evergreens were brought indoors over winter to remind people that during the harsh months that there is hope and life can go on. Its a tradition believed to date back for several thousand years. Holly and Ivy are the two most potent examples, representing the male aspect and the female aspect of nature (not sure which is which). In fact this is the origin of the christmas tree, which used to be a branch of holly. The wreath, being a circle, represents the cycle of nature and life, and as they fell out of fashion for a while (and became associated with death), the christmas tree became the evergreen that was brought into the house for winter. The christmas tree was originally traditionally Holly, but die to its slow grow rate it was not commercially viable to grow it for this purpose, so the Pine trees became the thing.

And yes, the Christians pinched Easter. Easter was originally the name of a goddess of fertility, Oestre. The church never even bothered to change the name, the as languages changed over the centuries, Oestre become Eastre, then Easter. The origin of the celebration of Easter lie in celebrating the return of the goddess of fertility to once again breath new life into the world.

Lovely wreath. Come on, own up, who made it?

Having a celebration at the darkest, bleakest time of the year makes perfect sense. Probably why so many of us find January so grim and a long, long month to get through.

Christmas is pinched from winter solstice. That's important because after solstice, the days start to get longer and spring is on its way. I think the logic is that it can't really get much worse and things are going to start to improve from winter solstice onwards.
